Redshirting a juco? Topic

Does anyone know how easy or difficult it is to redshirt a juco player?  Particularly, I am thinking of telling him I would redshirt during recruiting.  I imagine it is harder in general to get a juco to accept the redshirt.... let alone during recruiting.

Does anyone have experience with this?

somehow i got this guy to redshirt...though i'm pretty sure i must have informed him of this during recruiting.

the shocking thing to me was that he was rated about 630 as a 2 year juco and i got him without competition and with the redshirt for about $1,200.

I tried it once with a JUCO player who had a 98 w/e figuring I could absorb the hit even if he wasn't happy about it, until his w/e dropped to 1.  Had to take it off, so if you're gonna try it, better inform during recruiting and spend the cash to get him to accept

IMX, redshirting jucos and transfers is much harder than regular freshmen in any case.

The message I got this last season trying to put a 'shirt on a soph transfer: "You do realize I'm a sophomore, right?"

I was able to redshirt a soph (only tried once that I can recall).  Usually I wouldn't think of redshirting a juco, but just wondered if anyone had success with it.  Sounds like often it won't work, but is possible.

how often do sophomores that didn't play much as a freshman accept a redshirt?

My question is - if you inform of redshirt during recruiting and then sign them but don't redshirt them - are they more likely to accept a redshirt as an upperclassmen than otherwise?

good question pj...not sure i've ever seen anyone discuss that before

That's Pelchat without even looking.  I don't know how we let that happen.

how would you know?  i do have 5 other WIS teams to feed my addiction with....

...but yes, you're right.  and i have forgiven you for allowing a scrub like that to come to Newark.

How often do you guys inform of redshirt during recruiting.  I typically don't use it and hope that I can eventually get them to accept once I sign them.  And if you inform of redshirt and they no longer consider you, can you just continue recruiting them normally and if you sign them they will take the rs?

I don't use it much at all.... in fact, I think I only tried it once recently that I recall.  And yes, I was able to sign him by putting in quite a bit of extra effort.  At first he stopped considering me (I think) but I was able to put in more effort to overcome the negative impact.  I do remember thinking it took a lot more to sign him.  I think I spend close to 3K getting him, when usually it would have cost about $1,200 for a player that close (this was for my D3 team).  I only did it with since he was close and no one else was battling me for him, and I only had one scholly to offer that year.  Obviously there are other coaches that have more experience and I looked up on the forum for their advice.

I think the usual suspects make a difference in it's success and cost - prestige of school, what other coaches are offering, random nature of each recruit personality.
