Spice up the draft (late rounds) Topic

As we all know, the later rounds of the draft are near useless.

What if a few players or maybe all players in the draft had some projected ratings that had a ? instead of a number.

Have say 10-20% of the draft have some secretive ratings depending on how much money you spend on your scouting budget.

Make the ?'s significant in number say 5-10 ratings of the selected players are represented by a ?.

This would definitely add some excitement to the later rounds as the players are selected at random thus there will be some bums and some studs (along the same % of quality players that there are in each draft so probably 2/25ths of the random players will become major leaguers.

You rate the "sure things" first and the question marks with good current ratings 2nd.    And if you say "No, current will also be a ?", you still rank them immediately after the "sure things."    After all, why draft a sure turd in the 5th round when you can draft a possible stud?

IOW, the late rounds would still be useless.

You're right, but atleast a few of the ? would be taken in the 4-6th rounds as you would still take the better relievers in the 2nd,3rd...

This doesnt solve all the draft issues but it could be a framework to tweak something from to find a better solution.

The best solution is to stop trying to incorporate luck into the draft and shorten the damn thing to 10 rounds.    But I'm the only person who believes a shorter draft is better.

The draft is fine as is.  No need to change it or randomize it.
3/2/2012 8:25 AM
INCORRECT!!!!  Please see my previous post.

I have no problem per se with shortening the draft.  I just don't see the purpose.

Removes the pretense that there's any importance to it.   All those undrafted players would go into undrafted FA.  And that would be a HUGE upgrade over the tryout camp PP for those who care about the health of their minors.

Then you'll get the handful of owners who actually care about their minors competing for the top undrafted players while everybody else gets stuck with ****.

At least the current system sees all those round 11-25 players being distributed fairly evenly across 32 teams.

I don't know how much "competing" would go on for a guy who'll never be more than a HiA player.   Your Doomsday scenario does not scare me.

In Mantle, 167 players drafted after round 10 weren't signed.  That's over 1/3 of them.   Or, IOW, 11+ teams didn't sign a player drafted 11-25.   What's the point?
3/2/2012 10:03 AM
My proposal: all draftees in rounds 11-25 asking for slot money are auto-signed.

RL rosters are populated, talent evenly distributed.

Problem solved.

It also mitigates the "need" for TC PP's, which I know you don't think should even exist.

No problem with that on my end.  But how many owners would pitch a hissy when they auto-"wasted" 300k on "PLAYERS THAT WILL NEVER AMOUNT TO ANYTHING!!!!!"?
3/2/2012 10:24 AM
Then make slot for rounds 11-25 $0.  They sign for salary, no bonus.
3/2/2012 10:27 AM
Well, that's retarded.
