I am wondering, which of these two sets of ratings would you think would be a more productive player offensively in a triangle offense? Which would be the better defensive player in a man-to-man defense? We have player #1 and player #2, each one would play a guard position. Please do not worry about potential, assume they have the same potential for each category. I am really more concerned with how you would weight the athleticism vs. speed on defense and the athleticism, perimeter, passing vs. spd, bh on offense. Thank you for helping out.

I wouldn't ever want someone with a 1 defense rating on my team

Took a few tries but I got the table aligned, sorry skinz you saw a first draft. Defense ratings are 40 and 46.

21 WE = not worth the time.

Are these two recruits you're considering or two players on your team already?

In my opinion, player 2 is the better defender. Player 1 isn't a legit scoring threat. His PER isn't great and he doesn't have excellent ATH/SPD to make up for it (he's more fit to be a pass-first PG). Player 2 would be more productive on offense as a SG, but he isn't a dominant scorer either

So the small increase in #2's DEF and ATH overcomes his rather large speed deficit?

These two players are hypothetical, I am just trying to understand how to relate the ratings with their impact on offensive and defensive performance.

That's the million dollar question. Every coach on here has a different opinion

I would say #2's DEF, ATH, PER, and WE all overcome the speed deficit. Especially since you're running a man-to-man defense and not something like the press. Of course, the potentials of the two also play a big factor.

#1's WE would scare me away.

Since their DEF ratings are relatively close, I'd say #1 would be a better defender based on his big advantage in speed.  I'd think #2 would be a better offensive player based on his PER and ATH advantage, but it would be close because #1's higher SPD rating.   Like usc said though, every coach has his own opinion and there are certainly better coaches than me who's opinion I'd value more than mine.
