Redshirt: Effect on Next Season Topic

If I redshirt a player this year and his WE drops from 90 to 50, will it be 90 again at the start of next season or 50 for the rest of his career?

It won't be 50 for the rest of his career, but you would have effectively changed the "benchmark".  It will start at 50 for next season.

Thx.  So the natural follow-up is a strategy question: would you rather get the extra year of eligibility with a 40 point drop in WE?  My gut is yes...

That's right - It will be 50 next year and grow at a normal rate from there with playing time.

Second question - it'll take someone smarter than I am.  He's likely to reach his potentials either way.  I don't know for sure which way gets him there faster, and has him at his peak for the longest time.

He's a freshman PG who had "High" potential in most cats that I care about for a PG (Defense, BH/Passing, Perimeter) but has already gotten through 80% of his frosh season with his 90+ WE and gained 50 points.  He has 0 minutes and is thus redshirt-eligible.  I think i'll ride it out until the conference tourney and then redshirt him and take the hit.

If you are saying you tried redshirting him and he dropped from 90 to 50, that means if you take it off and try putting it on again later it will likely drop to lower than 50. I'd probably leave it on and not take the chance it drops to 30 the next time.

exactly. don't expect 50 work ethic, that is very unlikely. its possible the guy takes no WE hit this time, or that he drops lower, like 30. but it almost definitely will not be 50.

OK.  but the precise number aside, it seems like the general thinking is i've stolen a year at 97 WE and i should take the exra year of eligibility despite the effect on WE?  I plan on giving him 18+ mins a game next season so it should pick up as the season goes along anyway.

Yes, I agree with the above provided that his we doesn't completely plummet when you redshirt him again.

Can you give a redshirt in the CT, or is it one of those actions hat has to be accomplished before the end of the regular season?

As for the initial question, I'd take the 40-point drop from 90 to 50 in WE and go cackling like a madman all the way to the bank, especially if you've had the advantage of cashing in on the higher WE throughout much of the regular season.

Right - I didn't realize you'd gotten that 97 year.  Bra-freaking-vo.  If you can get him to take it again with reasonable WE, jump on it.

Update: he took it happily!  He will remain at 97.  Must've built up some good HD karma.

dac -- careful on the ppg. There's a chance he will leave early if he averages anything close to that ...
