If you have a good chance at making the playoffs in the current year AND the guy in question is a reasonably good improvement over your current guy, you might not want to putz around with 1/8th of your season at less than full strength. WORST CASE SCENARIO: You contract-control a player for 10 full seasons. 327/343/360=3. 2 arb=5. 5 year deal=10. If he's 22 years old, you have him until he's 31. If he's a position player, he's likely to start declining at 32(the next season). And he may re-sign with you after his 10th season anyway. So what's the point in holding him back when you could actually USE him for a playoff season run?
