does playing a new offense help learn it faster? Topic

When switching offenses, should you play the new one or the old one til the new one catches up with IQ?

Old one.

Old one, unless you have a totally rebuilt team with like 6 freshman and a bunch of Sr transfer students or something, then you might as well just let the freshmen play the new one since your season is probably sacrificed anyway.

playing a system improves you team IQ in that system

whether you should play old or new depends on your team situation - if this season is hopeless, play the new system - if new IQ is close to old IQ probably play new - if your team has a chance this season especially if the gap is big, play the old

Forum myth.  Absolutely no difference.

Interesting because I have seen seble say there is no marked difference.
ie...  practice 10 minutes of Man and 10 minutes of Press and only play man-to-man, the improvement between the two will be similiar.

I know I've switched Off/Def numerous times and have never seen an IQ change for a set I played, but never practiced.    Maybe 10-15 seasons worth.  Some guys have played 60+ games and not practiced a set they played.   If it does still have an effect, I'd guess it's less than an overall 15-20 minutes of practice time per season.

There was also the theory that the reason a player's IQ went from F to D- was because they played against that off/def in a number of games.  Which came from an answer given during a developer chat.
But I've had players go from F to D- in fastbreak when I had gone several seasons and never played against a fastbreak.

During a defense change, I would highly recommend 65-70 team prac minutes.

I do have a team switching from Man to press.  Haven't practiced Man in almost two seasons, but still play a man/press combo.  I have a guy still with a F IQ in man after playing about 700 minutes those two seasons.

It's possible that he could have been a very low F, correct??

the improvement in IQ where a team neither practices nor plays it is one of the abiding mysteries of HD

I have assumed that there was some effect of playing against it - but the evidence is not there, as you say.

Still, if you look at seniors they often have shown improvement in off or def that is unexplained.

Yeah, pretty much.

The difference is either zero or incredibly tiny. I'm pretty sure it's zero.

When switching offenses, do you stop practicing the old O cold turkey, or do you "wean" yourself off of it?

Only two reasons I would consider changing offenses anyway, (1) if I planned on staying at that particular school for a looooong time, and (2) if it was FB you were moving away from (the other three are similar enough that you "probably" wouldn't notice much of a difference, if at all).  But to answer, my personal opinion is that it's best to just go cold turkey.
