I'd like to see an option where a reliever, particularly a closer, can be brought in earlier in a game than his inning available setting may indicate if there is a high-leverage pitching situation, such as tying run in scoring position and one or two outs.
For example: my closer is set to be available in the ninth inning. Yet in the bottom on the eight, one run lead, runner on second, two outs, that's when I may want to bring him in for a four-out save. Currently, I can't really do that.
One can say "just set his inning available to the eighth inning, problem solved". But not really, because that means he could come in to start the bottom of the eighth with a three run lead. I may not want to burn him that early in that situation because then he might not be available the next day. But if my setup guy gets in trouble, I may want to bring my closer in to shut the door in that high-leverage situation.
If there's no high-leverage situation, then he doesn't come in until the ninth.
