Round 1 Themes (2012 Championship) Topic

I am posting this year's themes a little early, so people can get a head start on building their teams.  This is not a thread to sign up for the WiS Championsip.  You can post questions on the rules here.

Q/A for $70M Theme

Q: Do you have to use 25 consecutive years for your roster (I.e. 1965-1989). Or can they be any years?

A: They do NOT have to be consecutive.

League Name: Progressive / Regressive
Salary Cap:
$80 Million

Description: The only rule is that you must use a player that has at least two WIS-eligible seasons (i.e., different years).  Here's the catch: If you advance to Round 2, you must use the same 25 players in the Round 2 $80M theme, except you must progress or regress each player to the next or previous available season.  You do not need to move all 25 players in the same direction.  There will be no rule differences in the Round 2 $80M theme.  You must use the same ballpark in both rounds.

DH: No
WW: No
AAA: No
Trades: No
Clones: No
Injuries: Turned On
SLL: Not allowed
Multi-team players: No restrictions (i.e., you can use partial or combined)
Ballpark: Any ballpark can be used, but you must use the same ballpark in Round 2
300K Exception: N/A

Q/A for $80M Theme

Q: Jeff, if I'm reading the $80M Theme correctly, a person pretty much has to build both his first and second season's roster and both of them would have to be checked/verified by the Commish prior to beginning?

A: No. There is no rule that requires Round 2 rosters be verified up front, so no I'm not going to require owners to submit those rosters.  The commissioners will be verifying that the round 1 players all have another season to use for round 2.  In the rare, but not impossible situation where an owner advances to round 2 but cannot submit a round 2 roster under $80M, the penalty will be stiff.  The penalty will be that the owner still has to use the same 25 players, but can use any different season... but the salary cap will be reduced to $60 million.  Good question.

Q: I assume that a player who whose next or previous eligible season is more than one calendar year up or down -- e.g. has eligile WIS seasons in, say, 1980 and then next in 1982 -- is still ok to draft? If we advance, we just move him to the next available season, even if it is more than a season away.

A: Yes, that is correct.

League Name: Variable Twist
Salary Cap:
$90 Million

Description:  Choose any single season team in history.  Take note of that team's regular season winning percentage as it will be important.  You can "twist" X number of players from your selected team.  Twist means use any season of that player.  As long as he appeared in one game for that team, he is eligible to be twisted (see baseball-reference.com for complete rosters).  The number of twisted players allowed (i.e., X), is based on that team's real-life regular season winning percentage. Every other non-twisted player (over $300K) on your roster must come from the single season team that you chose.  The team's winning percentage / number of twists (X) allowed is listed below…

Win% >= .650, X = 1
Win% >= .625 and < .650, X = 2
Win% >= .600 and < .625, X = 3
Win% >= .575 and < .600, X = 4
Win% >= .550 and < .575, X = 5
Win% >= .525 and < .550, X = 6
Win% >= .500 and < .525, X = 7
Win% >= .475 and < .500, X = 8
Win% >= .450 and < .475, X = 9
Win% >= .425 and < .450, X = 10
Win% >= .400 and < .425, X = 11
Win% >= .375 and < .400, X = 12
Win% >= .350 and < .375, X = 13
Win% < .350, X = 14

DH: No
WW: No
AAA: No
Trades: No
Clones: No
Injuries: Turned On
SLL: Not allowed
Multi-team players: No restrictions (i.e., you can use partial or combined)
Ballpark: Use the ballpark used by your selected team during that season (or closest season, if that season's park is not available)
300K Exception: For players <300K, you may use any player from same season as your selected team
Team Name: Include the season and team that you chose
Division Alignment: Random

Q/A for $90M Theme

Q: Is there a minimum number of non-twister >300K players you must roster?  Is there a maximum number of <300K players you can have?

A: No to both questions.  If you chose a team with a win% below .350, you could theoretically have 14 twists and 11 <300K players and roster 0 players from the selected team.

Q/A for $100M Theme

Q: Do all 5 individual teams have to be under .500 as well, or do individual team records not matter, provided the sum is under .500?

A: Individual team W-L records do not matter.  It's the cumulative record that matters.

League Name: The Silver King Experience
Salary Cap:
$110 Million

Description: This theme has one simple rule.  You must roster the $29 million, 1888 Silver King.  Anything else goes.  Who can get the most bang for the buck out of this much maligned pitcher?  The DH will be in effect for this league.

Q/A for $110M Theme
5/18/2012 10:46 AM
League Name: How Low Can You Clone?
Salary Cap: Varies (Most Likely $115, $120 or $125 Million)

Description: You will build your 25-roster using as few players as possible (i.e., by using multiple clones of the players).  The minimum number of players you can build a roster from is two.  Anybody using just two players will get to use a salary cap of $130 million.  For each unique player you add, your salary cap drops by $5 million.  There is no 300K exception, so make sure you find players with some scrub seasons unless you want to have an expensive bench.  My guess is that most teams will create a roster using 3, 4, or 5 players.  (For semantics, we'll call this a $120M theme).

$130 million = 2 players
$125 million = 3 players
$120 million = 4 players
$115 million = 5 players
$110 million = 6 players
$105 million = 7 players
$100 million = 8 players
etc.

DH: No
WW: No
AAA: No
Trades: No
Clones: Yes
Injuries: Turned On
SLL: Not allowed
Multi-team players: No restrictions (i.e., you can use partial or combined)
Ballpark: Must use a ballpark one of your clones called home
300K Exception: None
Team Name: Use the names of your clones, if possible, and/or the number of clones used
Division Alignment: Random

Q/A for $120M Theme

Q: Can you use two partials from the same year for two different roster slots?

A: No. The team center does not even allow this.

Q: Regarding the ballpark rule, does it have to be a park during one of the seasons you cloned, or just a ballpark that one of your clones has used during his career?

A: It can be any park used during his career.
