3 Point Settings Topic

With a player who has bad LP and PER (say 28 LP and 30 PER) how do you all set his 3pt settings, I have typically used -2 and made sure he didn't get much distro, wondering if there are any alternative thoughts

FAQ says:
  • +2: Always look for the 3 pt. shot first
  • +1: Take more 3 pt. shots than normal
  • 0: Take a 3 pt. shot as part of the flow of the offense. That is determined based on numerous factors,
including a player's position, skills, the style of defense and the positioning of the defense.
  • -1: Take less 3 pt. shots than normal
  • -2: Never take a 3 pt. shot unless it's a desperation shot
So I guess -2 is the way to go...

Doesn't matter what his LP his, any player who is under 40 PER should be put on -2 without a second thought.

I disagree with that.  If I have a post guy with 35-40 PER I'll put him on -1 and he'll usually shoot around 35%-38% from 3, which is really pretty solid.  It's only about .7 or .8 attempts per game usually, but it's something.  Unless he has dominant LP, that is.

Ehh which one of your 35-40 per player is shooting that percentage on decent volume?

I don't have any of those guys right now.  But my experience has certainly been that post players with that much per can be successful from range if you don't ask them to go nuts out there.

If you had a 40 per player shooting 35-40% on 1 3pta per game for a season, it simply means you got lucky. If you do this with 100 players with the same per for a season, 90 of them will shoot at a terrible %.

Nathan Carroll would be an example of a guy I had in the past who had ~40 PER and succeeded from outside the arc.  He shot over 40% his senior season, though my overall sample of shooting bigs suggests this was an anomolously high percentage.  He was also decently quick for a D3 C (~35 speed) but not very athletic (~40 ATH).

I go -2 with a low distro. If he *must* shoot with that LP and Per, I want the maximum chance of him being bailed out by a bad foul, and that means pounding it into the post, not gunning from distance.

But really, I'd prefer not to have him shooting, no matter where he is.

Donald Fisher is another one.  Much more athletic but only had 32 or 33 PER.

Alvin Meas probably had 45 PER.  ~60 ATH and 45 SPD by the end of soph/beginning of Jr year.

And how many 35-40per players shooting around .300 or lower have you had among your team? 20, 30, or is it something much more?

Looking at your Clarkson team, pretty much everyone is shooting 3s at an ineffective pace.

A) Nobody on that team is supposed to shoot 3s.  All set to -1 or -2.
B) Consequently, nobody's attempted more than 13, so while I would anticipate them all to remain ineffective from 3, the sample size renders the stat totally irrelevant.
C) Relevance?  Nobody on that team is a post player with 35+ PER, so it's not remotely germaine to the discussion.

To answer your question about how many I've had shoot .300 or lower with that PER rating, I can only remember one season and I remember it because of my level of disappointment because I had grown accustomed to seeing those guys succeed.

Interesting.  Dahs, I've had the exact opposite experience with bigs shooting 3s.  I used to like doing that as a "keep them honest" sort of thing, but got tired of how badly they always seemed to shoot.  I would say over 30% has been the exception for me.

Honestly, what you are giving is poor advice. Here are the PF/C in Knight D3 with per sub 60, taken more than 10 3s, and their 3pt%:

PF
59per/.293
59per/.315
58per/.339
55per/.474
53per/.390
52per/.348
51per/.200
51per/.167
49per/.294
49per/.143
49per/.294
48per/.304
48per/.387

C
53per/.100
46per/.143
45per/.171
40per/.208
38per/.190

3/18 of these players shot above .350, which is pretty much as low as I think is still efficient. 11/18 are sub .300, which is terribly inefficient. On top of all this, when your big takes a 3, his ability to grab offense rebound goes way down.
