As you can see, SP Norm Long does not appear anywhere on my Pinch Hit hierarchy - primarily because he is a pitcher and I can't place him there, but even if I could, he's just not that good of a hitter.

The pitcher on the mound when the PH was called for was Efrain Yang, a lefty. I was down 2-1 with the bases loaded and 2 outs, so I would argue that Contact or Other vs LH should apply, but if Power is preferred, so be it.

Here are the bats that were available off the bench and where they stand versus LH:
Sterling Adams (#1 for Late/Close need Power; #1 for Late/Close need contact; #5 for Other)
Harry Rivera (#3 for Late/Close need Power; #2 for Late/Close need contact)
Adam Dykstra (#9 for Late/Close need Power; #4 for Late/Close need contact; #4 for Other)

Other Settings:
  • All pitchers and hitters have the PH box checked in Player Settings.
  • Adams and Rivera have auto-rest set to n/a.
  • Dykstra has auto-rest set to 99.
  • All 3 players were at 100% rested.
  • Pinch-hitting is set to 5 - Very Aggressive.
So... WTF? Any ideas on something I missed or is this clearly an engine problem/bug?

Why did Norm Long hit?

Interesting.  Can't answer it though as I never even look at this screen.  All of the pinch hit and defensive replacement options and whatnot IMO have no bearing on the game. If left handed 2B can play just fine (I have seen it), and a rock can play RF, Catchers can do just fine at 1B.....then these secondary options are a waste of time in my experience.

Maybe if I really set all of these things I could have a few more wins under my belt.  I don't bother though.

Were they set as Rest or Bench? If they're set as Rest, that explains why, if they were Bench, then not so much.

Ya know... I've changed it since, so I can't be sure, but that is actually a possibility.

I'm an AL team and this was interleague using a non-DH lineup, that hadn't been adjusted since ST. And, at the end of ST, the vets may have been on Rest so they didn't pick up a last-minute injury.

OK, so looking at my - still unadjusted - vs RH non-DH lineup, it does appear all 3 may have been on Rest, along with Hector Eusebio, Carlton Reitz, and Tony Crespo.

I wonder how the AI determined which of the guys on Rest *had* to play, since it left my top hitters on the bench in favor of a group of light-hitting defensive specialists, even at 1B and corner OF.

FYI:

For this particular game, several players assigned to rest:  Dykstra, Reitz, Rivera, Eusebio, Adams, Crespo.

So, the manager had only P options to use a PH. He went with the best of his options.
