Diamond Legends and Progressive Leagues Topic

So I've been on and off of this site for several years playing mostly the basketball Sim.  What brought me back this time around was the baseball Sim.  It's baseball season, I've got the Yahoo Fantasy team going full throttle and I figured, what the heck, I'll give baseball here a shot.  I must say that I'm enjoying it so far and I've got several teams going in open leagues.  But I've also been reading the forums here and I, like many others, am already tired of the same 'ol, same 'ol in the open leagues.  Addie Joss, Tim Raines, Bip Roberts, HoJo playing shortstop and all of the obviously overused and tired "strategies" that so many team owners employ.  And being part of the, "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em!" crowd has already lost its appeal.

So the common response to threads like this is, "You should join a progressive or some other theme league, they changed my SimLife for the better!".  I won't dispute this notion, as I know it was true with the basketball and football Sims.  Unfortunately, all of the interesting progs are full and are seemingly very difficult to get into.  The remaining theme leagues just aren't doing it for me right now.  And then I checked out the Diamond Legends setup.  I like the idea.  Simple, yet different enough to be worth trying.

So I drafted my team and got into a league.  It was half full, or half empty depending on your outlook on life, and took at least 5 days to get to that point (based on messages in the league forum).  I'm typically not an impatient guy, but at that rate, it seemed like it would take 2 weeks or more to fill and that was a depressing thought.

Now, a few questions for ye forum lurkers.  In your experience, are Diamond Legends leagues fun?  Do they typically take a long time to fill, and if so, how long usually?  Lastly, what's the best way get on the waiting lists for the better and longer running progressive leagues?  Thanks, in advance, for any and all of your help!

I have never played Diamond Legends but  I got the impression most people don't.    It's almost never talked about on this forum.   I think those leagues take a while to fill.

There are always openings in progressives.   What are you looking for, I could make some suggestions.  Things to think about:

- What time period?
- Single Season or two season (two season teams have much better SIM players but also take more time to prepare for the draft)
- How many people in the league (12? 16? 24? More?)
- Do you want a normal draft order (worst to first) or something quirky (it's usually based on some comparison between wins and salary)?
- Who do you want to play with?
- Do you want the league to play fast?  Some leagues take 6 weeks between seasons, some start the draft  right at the conclusion of the previous seasons and there is no down time.

1920's - Present

Single Season

- How many people in the league (12? 16? 24? More?)
24 and up

- Do you want a normal draft order (worst to first) or something quirky (it's usually based on some comparison between wins and salary)?
Normal or quirky is fine by me

- Who do you want to play with?
Dedicated owners

- Do you want the league to play fast? Some leagues take 6 weeks between seasons, some start the draft right at the conclusion of the previous seasons and there is no down time.
The faster the better!

selvendar - look at the Progressive Classifieds - there is an ad for a league that is about to start the 1918 season (in two years you are at 1920, as you would like) that needs just 1 owner to begin - so it can happen immediately.

Wow, the classifieds are barren....it's as bad as I have ever seen.   I wouldn't worry about it, someone will start a new one soon enough if you are willing to wait.

Of the ones available Harrelson's random season looks cool and there are 1/2 dozen quality owners in there.

Slicksticks runs a very efficient league and does contrarian (although contrarian's league is probably harder to get into, lots of dudes want to play).

We'd love to have you in the WIS Championship.  Six very different themes, all with different salary cap levels.

@italyprof -- thanks for the heads-up.  I am going to hold off for now.  (See below)

@Trentonjoe -- Yes, I thought it was rather barren myself, especially considering that baseball (by far) seems to be the most popular sport Sim on this site.

@schwarze -- Wow...it is quite spectacular what you have going there.  I don't really think I'm skilled enough to even been in the same league(s) as most of your membership.  Hopefully I will be soon enough.  Thanks for the offer.

I just checked out Hardball Dynasty and I think that's the direction I want to go for the time being.  I've submitted a ticket asking Customer Service to refund my team in the Draft Center and apply it towards site credit so that I can get started on the HD.  I'd say half of what excites me about Open Leagues in SimBaseball is seeing what AAA Prospects I'm getting with each new team.  I enjoy trading players, watching their progress in big league play, etc, so I think Hardball Dynasty is where I need to be.

I really appreciate your responses and advice here.  Thank you.

I have Rose in a single season progressive.  I drafted him in 63 - and we're just about to start 1964.  So needless to say he's not jumping up the charts yet, but he accumulate 198 hits in his rookie season.

This is Pete Rose's line from Contrarian's progressive that started in 61 and is now in 1973:

League Owner G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO SB CS AVG OBP SLG OPS
Career Totals 1738 6608 1117 2206 331 52 109 794 672 594 28 22 0.334 0.398 0.449 0.847

The Jimmy Carter Prog, which started in 1980 is looking for a couple of owners for the upcoming 1998 season.  Contact oram13 or crazystengel if you want to know more.
