Intentional Fouling Topic

How does the intentional foul engine work?

I have it set to intentionally foul if trailing by 7 with 2 minutes remaining.  In my last game, i was trailing by 1 with 41 seconds. The other team ran the clock down to 6 seconds before shooting.  In real life, I would've intentionally fouled before then.

Does the engine override our settings at the very end of a game?

My settings are 4 with one minute, and I won a game a couple days about by intentionally fouling down one with 30 seconds left. Maybe it uses your settings with more than 35 seconds left, and automatically fouls if you're down and the opponent's shot clock is turned off. That's the only piece of information I have though.

why would you have intentionally fouled.  he couldn't run the clock out and you would still have gotten the ball back with a chance to win or tie if you didn't get a stop.  see it all the time, coach trusts his D to make a stop and then pushes up court for the win.    I think the engine worked as intended there

But a lot of coaches would have intentionally fouled in that situation. Maybe the other team has been struggling from the line? Also 6 seconds is not a lot of time if you have to advance the ball and then launch a 3 pointer. Many coaches would want to have more time to actually run a play with some options.

6 seconds is an eternity and we should see better shots than those launched in that time frame.  End of game logic is just not that advanced to include all the possibilities we see in real life.  Al, in your game, you'd be better off fouling to save yourself time to get a decent shot.  I don't think I'd change your settings though.  You'd have to make it intentionally foul down 1 in the last minute.  I think the computer chose the right course of action.  Get a stop and have a chance to win in the last 6-10 seconds if he misses his shot.

I think it only overrides in the last minute when logic dictates that your opponent can just run the clock out and win if you don't foul.

Agreed, don't know why you'd foul when down 1 with 40+ seconds

Thanks for your perspectives, guys!
