Only a 28 WE, so he's going to get some starts and time as a freshman. He doesn't know the offense at all, but was average at our D (zone) in high school.

I'm thinking the only spot to put him is at the 3 (BH/Pass cannot play at the 1-2; Reb/SB cannot play at the 4-5), but wanted to see if anyone else had experience with a guy like this or any tips. With 1 distro at -2.

I have a similar player to this on my wooden DIII team, Randall Leong. He is going to be a great scorer that will go to the line a lot.  I think you could spread him around a bit depending on the make up of the players around him.  I'd consider playing him at the 2 if you're up against a man defense with a weak defender or a guy you want to get into foul trouble at that position, but turnovers will be an issue.  In all other cases I think, even with the complete lack of rebounding he is going to need to play at the 3.

In my experience, shooting threes was not even an option.  I'm guessing because his ball handling was too poor for him to be able to get a decent enough look for the three. This would only be an issue if his perimeter is High/High and it goes up like crazy.

If he turns out to be like Leong, I'll be thrilled.

That's sort of the plan, but I haven't had a guy like him before, so wasn't sure whether that high of a Ath/Def would compensate for below average (to start) speed at the 2, or whether those strengths would be negated by the fact the opposing SG was faster than him (which, if the defense is negated, would leave this guy as a black hole on the floor).

Recently departed Leite was similar.  He made a fantastic 3.

Had a guy that was 85 ATH/96 DEF in D3. He was very similar in all other attributes. He had a lot of turnovers, but he was such a shutdown defender, I couldn't NOT start him.

udm_mike and caesari, did either of your players spend time at the 2 or 4?

If so, did the pass/BH/spd hurt him much at the 2?

If so, was he dominated on the boards at the 4, despite the athleticism?

Defensively, do you play 2 - 3 or 3 - 2?  If it is a 2 - 3, is there a difference defensively between the 3 and the 4?  Either way, you'll have a guy underneath whose rebounding is a 1.  If it is a 3 - 2, is there a difference between the 2 and the 3?  I think based on that he has to play the 2 as his speed will get better.

I would play a 3-2 zone. At the SF he would be a wing defender. He would be able to shutdown dribble penetration and because of his Ath/Def could get out to defend the "3." His lack of speed would be somewhat negated in the zone because of the Ath/D. In a 3-2 he would only have to be a weakside rebounder, somewhat negating that defencey. I'd set him at 0/-2. Let the computer decide, if it's a good time for him to shoot or not. At that setting, he's probably going to get 0-2 shots a game unless it's a blowout

I'm not 100%, but I think so.  But his bh got to a respectable level before he was an upperclassman.

But feel free to start him at the 2 if we play to test it out  :-p

My guy even played PG some. I just lined him up against the best scorer on the court (1-3) and so I'd risk running my offense through him a few times. I wouldn't recommend doing that in big games, but you can get away with it against teams that are worse than you.

Did not play him at 4 or 5 though, I think the rebounding would be pretty bad.
