I've done a pretty crappy job lately recruiting for my Seton Hall team, but I currently have three recruits in the bag (and three open scholarships), but I also have a fourth recruit whom I'm battling for.  This fourth recruit is a big-time player (fifth best SG in the nation) and with him in mind, I've only offered schollies to two of those three locked recruits.  But the signing period is coming up and I'm debating cutting Leary so I can sign those three locks... But I really would prefer Leary and those three locks or Leary and two of the three and the superstar I'm battling for, rather than the three locks and a walk-on.

So is it worth the risk of getting rid of Leary for a much better guard in his place, or should I just keep him, since I really need guards on my roster right now and he honestly is significantly better than any walk-on I could get in his place?

P.S.  I only have just over an hour to make a decision, as signings start at 8.

this question is impossible to answer since the answer completely depends on whether you will win the battle for the stud. If you think you are going to win the battle, cut him. If you don't know, don't cut him, and then if you do win, you still get the stud, this guy and the best 2 locks...

Yeah, what does the "instead of" look like?

That looks like a very difficult battle to win against BC.

It's going to be.  But I have a lot of money to pour into him and he's only 10 miles away.  I think I'm going to stick with Leary.  The instead of options look like guys who are okay now, but who have the potential to develop into stud guards.  Most of them will come in being at least slightly better than Leary.

My biggest reason for deciding against cutting Leary is that one of my locks who I have a scholly on is an ineligible, so the chance that he might not even show up on campus and I might be left with two walk-ons, is enough of a reason for me to keep Leary on the team.

in low d1, 1 walkon is preferable to 0, and 2 are preferable to 1

edit: low meaning anything other than a+ prestige or equivalent (a in area where there are no a+s, etc)

Billy, could you share your opinion on DI walk-ons? I've considered a strategy where I take at least 1 walk-on at a time,  but I've typically gotten caught up in worrying about saving that 25% carryover.

I don't think you should purposely aim for 1-2 walkons.

The upside that I see is unless I have a bunch of budget leftover to sign another guy, I'll have $15k extra the following season to recruit with.

But I suppose this is something you can only do in the right situation.

For low end D1 teams to do well in the NT, and dare I say, even win a game or two, they need to have a big class of JR/SRs and a favorable draw in the opening rounds. When you consistently take 1-2 walkons a year, it's almost impossible for you to have a big class. And to be honest, I don't see many players that are worth spending 40-60k at with D+ to C prestige.

I see what billy g means. I wouldn't necessarily aim to get a walkon but If the situation is right for me to grab an elite player I will take a walkon in a heartbeat if I feel I have a realistic shot at the elite player. If I can build a team that has 3 or 4 elite players I can worry about filling my roster another season if that is the key to success in the post season.

Billy g's point is easily understood. You use 60k to recruit 2 slots as opposed to 4 slots, so you get 2 good players as opposed to 4 mediocre players. My contention is that it is nearly impossible for low prestige d1 teams to land the kind of studs that will make a 8-10 roster team worthwhile and competitive. By fielding a deep team with a 5/6 players SR class, you can try to win via iq and class imbalance when the 6 player class is all SRs. But I guess there is more than one way to skin the cat.

Fear of having two walk-ons should have no place whatsoever in your decision making, especially at a BCS school.  In fact, in your situation, having two walk-ons instead of one would probably be to your advantage if you have confidence in your abilities as a recruiter.  If you don't have the aforementioned confidence, don't worry about the extra walk-on, it won't do you any good anyway.  One of the biggest mistakes I see every season is coaches signing a dud or two just so they won't have multiple walk-ons.
