Coach, just flew back from my evaluation visit of XXXXX.
The trip was a nightmare, but what's new?
Anyway, knowing what I know about DII basketball, here were some of the observations I jotted down as I watched him play:
- Excellent ball handling skills - he has the raw skills to make me think he has *tremendous* upside.
- Good free throw mechanics - I definitely think we can correct some fundamental issues to help him improve.
- Really poor rebounding fundamentals - I don't see any upside here.
- Can knock the outside shot down if open - I see such solid fundamentals that with enough practice I don't see why he can't be a *significantly* better shooter than he is today..
Looks like the team primarily plays runs a motion offense. Maybe he had a big date after the game. I can't think of any other reason that he'd be out of position that many times when they ran motion.
Defensively, they played mostly a halfcourt press/zone. Pretty typical of most players that age in terms of understanding the zone. Based on their sets, he seemed like he knew where to be while running press, but there were a couple of times he was out of position.
Overall, I think with some work, he'll be a decent Division II player - although he would probably sign with the right DIII school - I don't think there's anyway he'll see an offer from a DI school.
Now don't hate me, but I accidentally stared too long at his girlfriend (how was I supposed to know it was his girlfriend)? Anyway, she made a big scene. There's no way he's going to even consider Montevallo now. I say move on.
