A recruit recently told me he was thrilled with the idea of playing for me and was happy to get my call. Then he said this:

"Then we called the bowling alley to ask them how they carry their 16 pound balls. It was sweet. 16 pound balls! "

Is this supposed to indicate to me that he's some kind of trouble-maker? Or is it just supposed to be some attempt to give a different response from a recruit and add a bit of humor?

short answer - the latter.

Okay because the same recruit also used language I can only assume is slang I don't understand in other responses. His GPA is 2.5, and I've noticed he doesn't act as "intelligent" as the other recruits I"ve signed at 4.0 GPA and 3.4 GPA.

Never mind a smart kid could just under achieve in high school.  What stereotypes.

Ignore the language.  2.5 is 2.5.

I forgot about that email.  I haven't seen that one since the early days of HD

I know you say "ignore the language"  but I never seem to get slang messages about goofy crap like this from kids with a 4.0.

its a remnant from something that is no longer part of the game

Yes I remember when kids were rated based on character or some such. Glad to see that's no longer a part of things in my latest go round with HD. All it did was make you angry when the kid with the perfect attributes you wanted was there, but you had to find out if he had character issues and if he did there was almost no point. Any time you saw someone with good ratings who no one would recruit, you could guess why. More straightforward and better now I should think.
