Defenses at D-I Topic

I have seen general agreement on these boards that the press is the most powerful defense at the lower levels and that the zone is the least powerful defense at these levels. I was wanting to see what everyone thinks about these defenses at D-I. Is the press still the most powerful? Can a zone defense work at D-I?

Pretty sure the consensus is that press doesn't work well in D1, because the ballhandlers are too good. All the best teams use man.

press doesnt work well in d1 because people are in d1 to compete at the high end - when you are competing at the high end with press, you need deep teams with good iq. with high end d1 teams getting tore up by early entries, and generally having few seniors and the like, press just makes a lot less sense. i don't think the high amount of ball handling has much to do with it, a strong d1 press can still tear up teams with several guards in the 90s for bh, no problem. the problem is building that high iq deep press team. plus, a lot of teams regularly float walkons, that just isn't a good place to be if you want to be pressing.

there is still little doubt in my mind that the best team ever, in a series of games against only equally amazing teams, would be playing motion/press (or fb/pr). however, that has little bearing on actual game play. if you are a really high end team, you play a lot of teams worse than yours, and i think you are best off to play man in that case. there is less inherent volatility in man defense.

zone defense absolutely can work at d1, but we have to be clear which part of d1 we are talking about.

the strength of zone defense is being able to make the most of your best players, getting the most minutes out of them. you can run with a really shallow bench with little downside. thus, zone suits teams with great talent disparity. for that reason, IMO, zone really has no place in championship level play - where teams have great upperclassmen and great underclassmen alike.

however, zone can be fantastic for teams outside the top 10-15 or so. especially for a rebuilding team, you usually can only get a couple studs, and there is no better way to capitalize on them than to play zone. this also allows you to run a team with 8-9 scholarship players more effectively than anyone, which can have major benefits in recruiting. i think a very viable strategy for zone is to sign 2 players every year on a 6 man class. it works till you get into early entry territory. i think far few teams play zone who are like, low-medium level BCS teams, and hopeful mid majors. a lot of those people make the mistake of just signing who is easy, and zone is bad for that, you will have little talent disparity. but if you do it right, its very possible that zone is the best rebuilder defense. downside is, when you get to the point of competing for championships, you have a defense switch to make, but that can be managed to be not that big of a hit.
