Biggest postseason choke artist? Topic

Fooling around with the site waiting for the season to rollover.  Was looking at my team's "success".

In my long stretch at my D3 program, I've been fortunate to have been awareded a #1 NT seed 13 times.

I managed to win a national title once.  So maybe I'm not a complete idiot to coaching in the postseason.  Maybe.

Here are the results of those 13 tourneys:
  • 1 national title
  • 1 championship game
  • 1 Final Four
  • 3 Elite Eights
  • 4 Sweet 16's
  • 3 2nd Rounds
No first round flameouts -- amazingly -- but I'm more likely as a number 1 seed to fall short halfway through the tourney than I am to get past the midway marker.  Given the favorable opponents one gets with the seed, that seems to be a rather remarkable job of choking on my part.

My expected win total in those 13 tournaments is 27 wins more than I actually have achieved.  So on average, I'm losing 2 rounds earlier than you'd expect from a #1 seed.  And that's even with having won the NT in one of those seasons.

I know in general it's hard for a #1 seed to get the wins to match the seeding, but my futility seems to be taking it to a new level.

without knowing how you compare to the curve for all #1s, I can't really make an informed opinion, but it looks like a resume to be proud of to me...
Seeding and matchups in HD are so not like RL that even as a 1 you are likely to face a really good team even as early as round 2. A lot of the 8 or 9 seeds are really good teams...

You suck.

Based on my observations, it is less than stellar.  It could be worse, but I also think most teams that are #1 seeds this many times don't fall flat on their face as early as I do on a consistent basis.

8/9 seeds can be quite good, 4/5 seeds more so.  But still, I think the coach of the random #1 seed team would freak if you told him/her that, "On average, you probably aren't going to make it to the Elite 8; in fact you're just as likely to lose in round 2 as you are to make the Final Four."

Maybe there is another coach or two that is doing just as bad, but I find it to be a lot more easy to poke fun at myself than to target anybody else.

Been a top-3 seed six times in the past eleven seasons in Allen, including the overall number 1 in back-to-back seasons at one point.  Never made it past the Sweet Sixteen in those six seasons.  I've been a top-8 seed in each of the past 12 seasons.  Nothing beyond the Sweet Sixteen, going 0-6 in Sweet Sixteen games.  Maybe not quite as bad as you, but I haven't had the time to get there yet!

I knew isack was going to jump in eventually.

What can I say, I'm a mediocre coach taking advantage of seeding advantages gleaned from being a part of a great conference.  I've only had a couple games in there that I really should have won.  For the most part, I'm just overseeded.

you know, sample size is pretty small here too.

With the parity in D3 these days a lot of 1 and 2 seeds are losing earlier in the tournament.  Not a big deal.

You still suck, though.

Maybe we can get Rails to offer some kind of seminar in the Twin Cities for how to win NT games.  He seems to know what he's doing.

I don't know what my official NT statistics are but I have never made the Final Four.....I have been to the Elite Eight twice, not that THAT is very impressive either.

50 Seasons
1000 Wins
ZERO Final Fours

I consider myself an ok coach... I've been to the NC once and a few final fours and elite 8's that proves its dumb luck!
