Copied from other thread...

I've speculated about this in other threads.  Don't bother looking.  HBD's best players are always either top-half first round draft choices or high priced International free agents; they don't come from anywhere else.  Short answer, HBD owners want it that way.  No one wants to spend money scouting and have a first round bust while another owner doesn't spend and finds a Jose Bautista in round 3.  It's not as dynamic as real life, but face it, the customers would ***** if there was more randomness to this game.

I'm actually impressed that you found an MVP drafted in the 2nd round.  I didn't find one in my world.

Another "it's not like MLB" thread.

Correct. It isn't.

No one wants to do everything right and lose to somebody who does nothing right but hits the HBD lottery several seasons in a row.

right... but my thinking is that I would like there to be a little more randomness so that I can make the draft a competitive advantage. the only way you can make it so currently is by sucking your way to the top of the draft so that you're in the mix for the top players.  I think that playing time, coaching, and statistical success should build confidence and allow a player to "outperform" his ratings, and the Diamond "lightning bolt" should be a little more helpful... but I also love HBD just the way it is, so maybe I shouldn't complain ;)

I think somebody would ask how it would be a competitive advantage if it were more random... I think that's where scouting should come into play.  I think everybody should "see" the top 15-20 or maybe top 30 players in draft prep (more like real life, few "surprise picks" in the 1st round), but scouting should have a greater influence later in the draft. in real life later picks are often used on "local" guys that have been scouted but not necessarily loved by scouts. maybe your scouting budget affects "local" guys you see, and more $ in scouting = more local "gems" that you see that nobody else sees... or something?

Random luck giving someone a superstar player is not a good thing for what is essentially a complex strategy game. As it is now, the successful GMs in this game are typically better at player evaluation (resulting in winning trades and acquiring the best talent) and money management, which I see as a good thing.

Pick six numbers. Go to the convenience store. Buy a ticket.

Problem solved.

Went back 10 seasons in Capra, to Season 15 (my first).

Looked at both leagues.  There have been 4 International MVP's.

There was one year when  tie occured.  One guy (12th pick) won three MVP's. A 13th pick won two, as did a 4th pick.

All together, the highest MVP pick was #2.  The lowest was #19.

Making it more random might discourage tanking.

Isn't that what DITRs are supposed to do? The main problem is that DITRs are usually terrible.

Making it more random will discourage playing.

Then you've been very fortunate that none of them have been derailed by injury.    IF people wanted more randomness, they should as for a more realistic injury rate.    We'll put 10-15 on the DL all year.   At all levels.   MLB teams put that many on the DL at each level.

FWIW, the injury rate was higher in the early years.   And people threw fits.   Some still do despite having injuries about 1/8 of a realistic number.
