Start small to finish big.
The simplest thing is to call the player's coach and get some info from him. He will ALWAYS respond and usually will tell you if you have a shot as a backup or no chance - and no chance really means NO chance in my expereince.
Then you may have to call the player or send info a few times if he's really tough.
Then it's STs until he agrees to talk to you.
Then HVs for a bit until he'll take CVs.
Then you (hopefully) get him to sign.
bistiza, no offense intended, but that is about half wrong..
coaches will always reply, that is true. I don't mind calling the kid though, if he rejects the call that's as good as a no and it saves the $10 (no big deal and yes, you sometimes get off/def set info from the coach, so to each his own on that one)
player may take calls and letters, but they have very little value for pulling down, and almost no value as far as effort before the recruit gets pulled or drops. (effort spent to pull down has a built in limiter - it doesn't have the same value as effort spent for a kid you can recruit normally.)
Once he talks to you (ie use evals til you are listed as considering) use either HVs or CVs depending upon which is the better value at that distance.
