So, I was out of town last night and had a friend recruit the one player I knew I could get and fulfilled one of my two needs. Now I see all but one of the other players I was interested in for my second need is interested in a d3 school (I'm d2). The other coach is very experienced so I'm inclined to believe he'd be smart enough to have backups. The recruit is local to him but far from me, but I still think I have enough budgeted to win a battle (although it would be helpful to know the prestige multiplier from a level d2 to a level d3). I'm inclined to believe this is ok but didn't want to be unethical towards a lower division coach. What do you all think? If t is ok now how long is it ok till (I'm a day before signing)?

I've only done that one time, but the D3 coach got upset.  Still, I don't think it's unethical at all.  As a D2 coach, I've had D1 coaches recruit players that were considering me many, many times.

It's recruiting, they aren't yours until they've signed. People like to whine about it, but nothing is unethical about your situation.

You don't get to call "shotgun "in recruiting.....

it is ok until they are signed and off the board. period. if the other school was coached by the buddy who helped you out that might be kind of ******, but other than that fire away.

Also, IMO there is no real difference from D2 to D3 for prestige, by which I mean that it goes D3 A, D3 A+, D2 D-, D2 D, etc, with each being about 1/3 tougher than the one before.  Also, I don't place a whole lot of stock in D2 prestige anyway. Its about money, which you should have more of as the higher division team (barring big disparity in open ships of course), and spending it efficiently for the distance. If you have those 2 advantages almost any D2 or D3 prestige differences are secondary...

Caesari's got it dead-on - "engaged ain't married."

I am a D3 only owner, and I still think this is OK.

That said, I'd suggest a backup plan for you as well. I often will battle D2 schools with my D3 Hamline, and I win more often than I lose (so far), so I don't think the level up helps you as much as you may think it does.

Well I think i'll likely step off his guy because I can probably get another guy for cheaper.  Right after I made that discovery I found this in our world forum.  Obviously, some people don't feel the same way.  Also, he sent this to the guy on his coaches corner:

...me, That is really busch league and a jerkoff move by you, Just know that in the future I will go after every single recruit that you go after the next few years.
And that is why I was apprehensive.  Still you all make good points and I agree that it is ok.  It's just crazy how some people treat the game and specifically recruiting battles.

That guy sights the fact that "it was his dream school and that all his family went to grinell also."

Seems like a noob, and I don't think his opinion is really a valid one on this whole "poaching or not poaching" subject.

And once recruiting ends, I have a contribution to make to this thread, but I don't want to reveal any information just yet.

That guy is very new and in his 3 seasons has gotten himself a poor reputation already which without boosters I'm guessing he has done from odd recruiting like promising ridiculous minutes and starts he can't deliver.

That being said while not unethical to take players, I always raise an eyebrow at a coach who has to step down a level to get a player. I've had it done to me plenty (especially by D1 coaches when I'm in D2) and to me it seems there has to be a better player you can get that a D3 team can't have.
9/30/2012 10:38 PM
I disagree.  There are plenty of players on D3 schools that would fit in well as starters on the best D2 teams.

This is what annoys me during recruting when a coach has the balls to accuse you of wrong doing and then proceed to make idle threats and hurl insults. I wish a coach who has the liquor bottle pic up in 3 season would threaten to take my recruits... And I also agree that D2 coaches can find and use D3 gems and D1 coaches can find D2 gems. Absolutely nothing wrong with this and probably more coaches should look to do this.
9/30/2012 11:21 PM
I always laugh when someone says they are going to go after every recruit you do in future years... If that is the case then they clearly aren't a very good coach. I don't change my recruiting game plan from what my team needs, not how I can screw another coach.

I also agree that there are D3 players that are better then D2 players, and the same with other divisions. You find what your team needs and you recruit the player, it makes you plan for how to spend money and when to go "all in" on a player with no guarantee's.

Well, someone here is showing poor form but I don't think it's you, therewas47.
