Motion O Coaches:

How much value do you place on PA/BH in your big men? It's hard enough to find big men with nice ATH to complement their core ratings. Do you consider them an offensive wash if they can't pass/handle the ball? How much does having one bad PA/BH effect the rest of your team in the motion o?

Thanks,

AP

personally, I don't think it's too big of a deal at the 5 spot ... at the 4 spot, however, I feel it's important and I like to put my better passer/bh big at that position.  That's just a personal opinion, of course.

I agree with hog regarding the 4 slot. It's not uncommon for me to run a strong-rebounding SF in the 4 hole on my motion teams, especially if they're press defense teams, to take advantage of the likely greater Ath/Spd combo over your standard D2/D3 PF on defense.

In general though, I don't think you need to stress much on PA/BH. Obviously more is better than less, but any passing in a big can be a bonus IMO and I've found a BH rating as low as 20 or so is enough to keep a center from being a turnover machine. To be clear, I'll still take a guy with a sub-20...I've signed bigs with single digits in both categories before when their Ath-Reb-LP numbers were too good to pass up compared with Plan B...but in an ideal world, I'd like to see my center with a BH of at least 20.  [Edit: Dawned on me that I don't know what level the OP meant when asking the question, so I'll clarify that I'm talking primarily at D3 here when I say 20...]

My center and 4 have the same assist to turnover ratio 1 ast, to 1.5 turnovers per game, they are low bh/p andino 17  bh, 51 passing, stokes 1 bh, 23 passing, and the frosh who i started last game at center 12 bh, 13 passing. i would probably run normal tempo it cuts down on the turnovers keeps you in a good flow offensively.

Based on recent experiences, I have been upgrading the value of passing in the four slot in motion quite a bit.

Thanks guys. Pirate: What level are you at? 51 PA in a big man is pretty high if you aren't at DI. I would really have to sacrifice other categories to ever get close to that at DII.

Has anyone ever tried having all good BH/PA in the motion? Does having those attributes make the "offense" click thus allowing you to rely less on cores and be well rounded? Just a thought given what the FAQ/Player's Guide indicates as important for Motion...

Several lineups for my Drury team have been like that for a number of years now. They've worked pretty well.

The rest of my guys suck at bh, passing on my team at the 4 and 5 slots.

Thanks Pirate, do you think these ratings only effect turnovers though? Could having a high BH/PA all around your lineup create open looks within the flow of the offense? So turnovers may stay the same, but the way the offense clicks goes up the more well rounded you are in PA/BH w/ the five men you have on the floor?

Just a thought...

Yes, and Yes to some extent. If your bigs have good passing ratings they could make the quick pass out to a perimeter guy for a 3 or to your center for a dunk depending on his ball handling sometimes if in single digits they tend fumble the pass out of bounds or get it stolen away a little bit easier . I do like to try to have my pf with a good passing rating those guys seem to be undersized 4's like tweener 3/4.- Like Andino is he's at a 47 passing i think still average over a turnover a game.
