Promised start - minimise minutes Topic

(I saw a thread about this once but the search function isn't working for me right now.)

Say you were recruiting a kid with the plan of giving him low PT his freshman year, but a recruiting battle developed.  You really didn't have 10 or 15 minutes to promise, so you thought "If I promise him a start and set him on "mop up" maybe he'll only play roughly five minutes total between the beginnings of the halves."

True?

A problem that occurred to me after doing this was that presumably this kid will start all periods, including overtimes, in which case he may play half or more of the five minutes.  Yikes.

In a related matter, is it still the case that promises need not be fulfilled in CT / NT games?

The player won't start if you set him to "mop up".

The only way to minimize minutes if you start a guy is to use minute settings instead of subbing by fatigue and setting his to 4-8 or something.

Also, you need to make sure he starts 80 percent of the regular season (or 21 games if you play the usual 26 there). In the postseason, all promises are off - do what you want and he shouldn't complain.

Interesting.  Glad there are a couple of preseason games to experiment with.  If I start him with 4-8 minutes I'd fear it would end up at the high end, maybe even slightly above depending on the other players' minutes.

Regarding the 80 percent figure, I had used that in the past but is it not the case that there is now some variation built in?  I thought that nowadays 80 pecent was good as a guidline, but some guys expect up to 90 while some will be happy with 70.  (It's been a while since I promised a start, I had too much dough sunk into this kid to lose him b/c I'd have been extremely limited geographically in finding plan B).

there is some variation among players now...most are 80% but I've had 70 and 90 - although the 70 might have been a minutes promise.

Along with using minutes rather than fatigue, you can take extra measures to optimize your settings elsewhere.  Make sure he's on Fairly Fresh, less aggressive on foul trouble, play uptempo when you can, but you probably were already intending to do that.
