This guy has been a total flop for me so far. I platoon him and use him against RH's and place him anywhere from 3 to 5 in the order (even the AI recs have him 4th) but he still under produces...

I'm not expecting huge numbers but I do expect decent slugging and RBI numbers.
In HDB how much difference does the guys in front and behind him make...I think the majority says it doesn't matter but my line up is pretty week so I wonder.

Any thoughts?

There's no such thing as lineup protection in HBD, so who hits before and after doesn't directly matter in terms of his particular performance.  Though, obviously, guys getting on base in front of him give him more RBI opportunities.

Looking at his ratings, you might be expecting too much from him.  Thought he should be producing significantly higher than a career .597 OPS in over 500 PA's, he's not a 3-5 slot in the lineup guy.  I'd expect something like mid to high .700s OPS, and would find that he would probably slot in to maybe the 5 or (more likely) 6 hole in one of my typical lineups.

Well, first off, he's really not that much of a hitter (not .387 OPS bad, but he certainly doesn't even look like a .700 OPS guy to me)
Personally, I would run out a defensive C with very little bat over him every time.
I don't think I've seen anything that indicates that a player's position in the batting order affects his performance (it would affect his RBI totals, but this is purely situational.... if he hits after guys that get on base, he will have more RBI).
That said, if I put a batter with those hitting ratings in my lineup, it would likely be in the 7,8 or 9 hole, depending on what else I have.

He isn't very impressive.  But he's better than the numbers he's put up the last couple years.  

Also, I wouldn't expect him to put up significantly better numbers against righties than against lefties.  Remember that most lefty pitchers are better against lefties, and vice versa.

HBD does not take into account "protection" in a lineup, and there are people who don't think it exists in real life, either.

That seems like pretty high expectations of him, to me.  Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Don Abe is a similar, but better (IMO) hitter playing in slightly less of a pitcher's park than Portland, and he has been pretty consistently high .600 to low .700 OPS.

You're probably right.  I started off with lower estimates of his performance, but then waffled while typing my post.  The fact that he's a RH hitter should devalue his performance since he'll be facing 60-65% RHP and will be getting the same-hand penalty while batting.

Thanks guys.  I might be expecting too much. I'll lower him and see what kind of  "spike" I get in his numbers. I thought with his power and numbers v RH he'd be good in the 3 or 5 slot...but it's not happening..

That's mostly right, but it depends on the rest of your lineup. He's probably batting 7th for me, but maybe that means 5th for you if your team is pitching/defense heavy.

Indeed playing in  portland and my team is mostly defense. I'm just starting my third season (new to HBD) and am slowing building pitching and hitting through the draft and some FA's.  My LOB numbers are horrible, but I understand that giving I don't have a lineup of hitters.

Something that's bugged me is what's the more important number: contact or vs LH or RH? I've got a 92 contact guy but in his low 50's vs both pitchers. I've played him in 7-8 spots and for one series in the #2 spot just for curosity. He did OK there, but I don't know if I should keep him there for a long test.

Batting eye, power and to a lesser extent, speed are numbers that would also be needed to draw conclusions about the high contact guy.

If you don't have a lineup of hitters, why do you expect him to produce rbis? 

His stats last season are mostly in line w/ my expectations, perhaps a shade above.  He'll bounce back this year from where he is today, but don't expect big things from this guy, neither offensively or defensively.  He's nothing more than a place holder until you can get a better catcher in there.
