Would you redshirt this player if you were me?  I did not play him all season.  I would say the default answer should be yes but since I will have six open spots next season I don't know if I want to limit myself in the number of freshmen I can sign.  I doubt I would sign six so I'm inclined to just go ahead and so the redshirt.  But since this guy seems to be a borderline D1 player, I'm not sure if it is worth it.  Any advice?

Both speed and defense were high potential at the start of the season but now obviously are no longer.

He might be borderline for DI BCS conferences, but he's not borderline DI overall. I'm not BCS with my DI team, and I've had guys who were similar to him. I've redshirted them and I consider them to be decent players. Then again, I'm not trying to win a national title or even do anything beyond perhaps get into the NT and win a game or two, so that info comes with that caveat.
