My DePauw team suffered a second round exit in this year's DIII NT in Knight, but still finished with the #1 RPI when 9th seeded Virginia Wesleyan took down 1st seeded Howard Payne in the national championship.

I'm just wondering if any other team has finished with the the #1 RPI with an equal or worse finish.  Has anyone ever finished with the #1 RPI despite a first round exit?  Or somehow gotten the #1 RPI with a PI championship? Or did I just essentially set some strange record?

I finished with the #1 rpi when I made it to the elite 8 at D3 Nebraska Wesleyan, but that is nothing compared to a 2nd round exit. Congrats, that is impressive.

my florida southern team finished with the #1 rpi and sos and got bounced in rd 2.  that was a monster team, loss still hurts me

not exactly what your looking for....but my Longwood Iba team did get knocked out of the 1st round with a #2 RPI.

Conf Champion NT At-large Bid NT (1st Round)

Didn't hang on to the #1 spot, but last season I lost in the first round of the conference tourney, then lost in the first round of the NT, and finished with the #2 RPI.

Best I've done is #2 with a second round exit (although I'm pretty sure I was 1 when I lost).

The SOS isn't as strong as the RPI because it took a serious hit during the NT, but this was a SOLID #1 overall seed team that just inexplicably had the wheels come off in the NT. We nearly became one of the infamous 1 Vs. 16 Casualties. I think the 1st games was double OT we won by a single point. Was season 9 in Tark and yes, it's still somewhat painful.

my #1 overall seed that dropped in the first round only ended up #2 by rpi, but i am sort of figuring someone out there has to have lost in the 1st round with a #1 rpi...
