Can someone clarify what is different about the redshirting process after the most recent update ("recent' being a strange word here, as the last update was a long time ago)?  Is it only that now, if a player rejects your first redshirt attempt, you cannot get him to accept it by continually offering it?

correct.the only way to make sure he accepts it is to tell him about it during recrutiing. the whole, take it off and put it on every 3 hours until it works strategy is no longer valid.

thanks, trobone. can you still recoup the lost WE points from a redshirt attempt by simply removing the redshirt?

yes

Another note: You can request to redshirt a player exactly one time each season.

So, if you request to redshirt a player and then remove the request - even before the same cycle ends -  the player will balk at you requesting him take a redshirt a second time and suggest you can't make up your mind.

I know because I tried to RS a guy, then literally two minutes later removed the request and decided I wanted another guy to be the RS player. The second guy rejected the RS, so I sent a request for the first guy again and he rejected it due to me sending more than one request - never mind he shouldn't have even gotten the first one since the cycle hadn't ended before I removed it.

Not true, I redshirted a soph, he accepted, then took it off to try it on a frosh, he had a WE drop, so I put it back on the soph and he accepted it again.

so there is still a chance that a signed recruit will accept a redshirt after he's signed if you didn't notify him of it during the recruiting period?

backboy,

My guy was different in that I didn't send him the request and he accepted, I attempted to send what he interpreted as two requests in one cycle - one where I asked him to RS and one where I took it off - so he balked and refused it altogether.

Yes...and it seems like a pretty decent chance.

In both Naismith and Wooden, I redshirted a sophomore without informing them, and they accepted without any WE drop. I assumed it'd be more difficult to redshirt in this system, espcially sophomores. But, that doesn't seem to be the case in my experience. And the aforementioned guys started almost every game during their freshmen season.

Here's how it goes from my understanding:

If you inform them of your intent to redshirt during recruiting and they accept this, they will ALWAYS accept the redshirt with no WE drop or anything.

If you don't inform them during recruiting, there is a chance they will refuse the redshirt, based upon how many players on your team have better skills suited to playing whatever position the guy plays - the more players you have who have better skills for that position, the more likely he'll accept the redshirt.

I personally never tell anyone I'm intending to redshirt them and take my chances by trying to apply the redshirt to a guy I know I won't play much because I've already got two guys planned for that position (I usually run a ten man rotation).  I've had a few issues (most notably this past season with my St. Lawrence team) but for the most part my players have taken the redshirt with no problems.

i think who else is on the roster is just one aspect of the recruits decision whether to take the redshirt.

I think the recruit's ranking and the school's prestige matter - is he thrilled to be there?

I also think that recruits may have some different levels of ego/team play, etc.

i sometimes use the inform of redshirt button - for example if I dont want the kid without a redshirt - but I often take my chances.  Sometimes kids seem to make stupid decisions, but so it goes.

Yeah, there is some randomness in the process:

I had a SF who I signed w/o informing him of a RS, then tried to RS him and he rejected it, even though I had 2 senior SF on the roster. One of whom finished first team All -Conference and might even be HM All American, then there was the other senior who would have gotten the backup minutes.

You're making the assumption that he refused it because it was a second request.

What I think is more likely is that he would've been unhappy with the first request, too, and his reaction to the second one simply mirrored what would've been the first. The "can't make up your mind" is just a standard message that people have long gotten when trying more than once to redshirt a guy, hoping for a better response than the first time. Don't take it literally.
