Releasing a player at the end of a season Topic

What would the motivation be of an owner who releases a good player after the season ends, when their contract is up? I'm assuming they don't plan of resigning the player, so it is no loss, but I don't get what the benefit is?

Is there any benefit for me to claim them? Is it possible for me to have the player, lose them to free agency, and get a draft pick for compensation?

I doubt I can do that but it'd be nice to confirm.

Open a spot on the 40.

If you add him to your 40, and he's a comp FA, yes, you'd get the pick.

A somewhat related question.

If a player has a mutual or team option on the final season of his contract and you release him, I believe the option is automatically bought out.

Does this buyout reflect in future season payroll at the time of the release, or at the time the roll occurs into that final season?
