Poaching a conferencemate Topic

Would you ever poach a conferencemate?

And I don't mean battling a conferencemate.  And I'm not talking about poaching outside of your conference.

This is not a judgement or ethical conversation.  I just want to get general sentiment on the unwritten code of wis-ethics.

All day, every day. If you are weak, and have a player I want, I take him. I contact care who you are.

I voted that I try to avoid it but I would and have poached against a sim. I would not poach a human conferencemate.

My thought process is would I want to face this guy every season? I'm trying to be the best team, and if a weak conferencemate has a guy I want, I will go get him. It's his sideline or mine.

In a non Big 6 conference, I'd be hesitant.

In a Big 6 conference I'm not holding off on trying to acquire anyone.

I would, but only if I knew I was going to win. I wouldn't do it just to weaken a guy, like I've done with other teams.

I don't try to make enemies, and I don't go LOOKING to do it, but if a search returns a guy I like, and he's being considered by a conference mate, then yeah, I have no problem with it, nor do I get ****** when it's done to me.

I've done it when I didn't see anyone else comparable that I could use as a substitute.

It also depends a lot on how full your conference is.  In a full conference you're depending a lot on the strength of your conference and subsequent SOS and OSOS to help buoy your tournament seeds.  In that case having strong conference opponents is definitely good for you in the long run and you don't want to hurt them.  In a more empty conference you and your human opponents are typically guaranteed of a solid win total anyway, and the emphasis shifts to winning your head-to-head matchups with the human opponents as often as possible.  In this case it becomes a lot more reasonable to poach from conference mates.  If they're basically winning 15+ games every season anyway, they're at least a decent win for you.  Make sure they're weak enough to beat by bringing their strongest recruits to your side.  Not that I actively go after recruits from TrentOnJoe or cagefan in the Knight Upstate - in fact, I still play it as described for a full conference and try to avoid battling them if there are comparable options available.  But I am aware that it's suboptimal strategy, and it's worth noting that that team is crap and my team in the traditionally fuller Tark USA South is much more successful.

none of these choices are my best answer. I generally try to avoid all battles if and when possible. But that means I look for other similar players to those I could battle for and likely win. If I can't find those, then I start looking for who is weak and can be taken. I don't really even look at what team it is at first, so if/when it turns out to be a conference mate, que sera sera. I just did this to chapelhillne 2 seasons ago in my first season in the Ivy league in Phelan. I did talk to him via sitemail after recruiting ended to let him know my logic (in that case I had targets considering only me for my spots, but still had a large bank and searched for something better than what I had already, and found a nice PF that turned out to be considering chapel. After evaluating the battle I decided I could probably win, but only by coming in late, so I gave it a shot and took the player).

So I suppose the "I try to avoid it option" is the best answer for me, but like I said, only because my first option is to avoid all battles if possible. If I decide I have to battle I don't care if its with a conference mate or not.

I recruit strictly to make my team as good as it can be. I don't have any limitations as to who I pursue or when. And I don't take it personally when anyone gets a player I pursued or grabs him at the eleventh hour. If it's not illegal, it's all right by me.  Lost one last season to a conference mate that I spent $72,000 on. Good for him. No such thing as poaching. A guy ain't yours till he signs.

I coach at D2/D3 and feel like there are plenty of comparable players, so no need to go after a player that a conference mate is on because there's going to be a similar one out there. I wouldn't think twice about poaching a player from a Sim-coached conference team. I can't see any reason at D2/D3 to go after a player that's considering another human team in my league.

At D1, if you're not taking advantage of your conference mates overextending themselves, you're missing out on good players.

Your job as a coach is to make your team as good as you possibly can. The end.

I try to avoid it, if possible, because a strong conference is beneficial in recruiting money. But if this guy is better than anybody else I've scouted (better enough to compensate for all the money I'll have to dump in, which may hurt my ability to sign other players) and I know I can win the battle, I'll jump in late.

As long as the move (both making it and making it at a certain time) is to your advantage, I understand. The thing I hate most that happens during recruiting is a conference mate jumping in late on a player they have no chance of winning. At that point, you're only weakening the other person with no benefit to yourself.
