looking for a co-coach (mentoring optional) Topic

not sure of the time frame (soon is good, but doesnt have to be), but i really am not interesting in picking up teams of my own at this time. however, i would enjoy coaching a team with someone, allowing me to partake in some HD strategy, while also not forcing me to actually do all the details that i struggle so hard to keep up with.

basically, id be looking for a quality coach who could run the team day to day and we could work together on big stuff (team composition strategy, recruiting, team setup, post season game planning strategy), and id like to play BCS level d1. optionally, id also be happy to mentor that coach. its half way there just by co-coaching, i sort of have to teach what i know on the areas the other coach isnt as strong, so we can be on the same page. but we can also make it an explicit mentoring effort and i am happy to share everything i know. ive mentored so many guys from nothing to multi champions, that id really like to start with someone who has already won a couple - 3 or 4 years ago, after cutting back substantially myself, i figured the last thing i wanted to do in this game was mentor someone who already knows the basics, into a top 5 - top 10 all time coach, it seems that would be a lot of fun. really plays into the reality that i enjoy talking about this game 10 times more than actually playing it, has been that way for years (hence my ongoing presence on the forums with no teams myself - but these forum topics just dont go deep enough into team planning discussions to fill that void for me).

anyway, only restriction, cant be phelan. we could use this ID to start at a low BCS school in rupp, or i have multiple IDs in tark BCS eligible (would rather start better than low BCS but could live with it). or we could use your ID anywhere you have it (not knight preferably). it can be an existing team or a new team. ive been co-coaching 1 team and i prefer it to having my own team greatly, but largely because the guy is a cool guy and he also knows his **** so he can totally run the show when i dont feel like it, and i can totally run the show if he gets busy/travels/whatever. would like to keep that paradigm, where either coach can coach a great team themselves, so that we dont have to both do everything. maybe someone thinking of cutting back a team, this would be a good idea for? or someone thinking of picking up a team but torn over if they can take a whole team themselves?

not in a hurry... i might just pick up a team myself if i dont find anyone, because i miss the strategy of high d1 recruiting and crafting teams. i am enjoying co-coaching this one team a good deal but we might stay mid major and i do miss high d1 so im thinking 2 co-coaching gigs is the perfect balance. but i really dont feel like i am ready to be a coach day by day, not up for that, and i dont think i ever will be - i just might do it because i miss certain aspects, but id really rather not, i just get upset at how badly i neglect them, thats been the bane of my HD existence for years now - would love to put those days behind me! so, i would much rather be patient and do a co-coaching gig. so if anyone is like, id do it, but want to play this one class out, or whatever, im happy to wait a couple months or whatever.

edit: the team i co-coach today is actually in knight, not phlean. my bad

is it? not like this is a novel idea. lots of guys run teams together, people always told me it was fun, but i never tried it until recently... and i rather enjoy it. definitely enjoying this team i co-coach now more than any of the teams i coached myself before i dropped them all, even without the multiple team nonsense... actually except for when i first switched to fastbreak like 1.5 years ago and was trying hard to learn the new system, that was pretty exciting, nothing else in the past ~4 years is close. its like, new, and fresh, and that is a bigger factor in enjoyment for me than anything else. i was thinking of switching all my teams to zone shortly before i dropped them all, only off or def i havent won with after i finally got one with FB. i figured it would help get things fresh again - i actually was playing zone already at USC (where i only stayed like 4 seasons), my first BCS zone team ever...

team shortage? that has nothing to do with it. most smart coaches can look at the team of another smart coach and find faults in setup & composition, or at least, they have alternate ideas. its about mixing things up about, each guy can give feedback on what the other guy is trying to do... that outside perspective is valuable, and its fun (for some people at least) trying to hash out what the best way is to do something. you get way more of that outside perspective & dialogue when there are two guys coaching a team, than when its one and maybe occasionally you solicit feedback from someone. one of the things people told me years back, guys who co-coached, is they liked it because it put them outside their comfort zone. instead of doing things exactly as they knew, they had to do something in between, and it ended up keeping things new and exciting for both parties.

anyway i think we're good, its not like i was hoping you'd be the guy to coach a team with me ;)

on the note of doing something fresh, im probably willing to do anything in high d1 EXCEPT play man to man. we'd have to do something a bit more creative than that, man is so overplayed in high d1 its almost sickening... im sort of burnt on FB after switching every single team to it to get to know it, so would prefer to avoid that, too. but otherwise, im open.

whoops. for some reason this is messing up and wont let me log into my normal account, but i need to post a correction. the team i co coach now, much to my surprise, is actually in KNIGHT. not phlean. phlean is fine, dont really want two half teams in knight, it could get tricky trying to stay in communication with both coaches during recruiting.

Jeff, I am definitely interested. I am working back up to the BCS in Phelan and Tark. Currently at Columbia (3rd season) in Phelan and Richmond (2nd season) in Tark. The only other world where I am D1 eligible is my Rupp Michigan State team. We've been running fb/man but just switched offenses as I don't have the same kind of success with fb (or anything else for that matter) as you have. If you are interested in MSU we could figure something out I'm sure, or we can wait til I get to the BCS in Tark or Phelan, which is my goal already anyway...

first, let me say, thanks! i didnt expect to get 15 responses already. they are much appreciated. I think I am going to stick with the plan for high d1, so sorry to the people looking for d2/d3, I just am not up for that right now. secondly, a few people asked how it might work. thats hard to say, theres a few ways it could go. what i am primarily interested in is team composition discussions and strategy. whats the vision for the team, what players do we need where, and why? all the how is this team going to look in 2-3 seasons and what do we need to make them awesome, type stuff. and also some team setup/game planning strategy, as well as recruiting mechanics (going for the targets) strategy. i generally would prefer NOT to be the "primary" coach, if you will. id rather just be like, the support guy, talking through things and helping when needed, and helping talk strategy. if you want to go a different way and make a different decision than i would, i generally have no problem with that - i just want the opportunity to have the discussion. however, im also willing to split duties, if that is better for the other coach - taking primary half the recruiting sessions, etc... i just really dont think you want me primary during the regular season, because i literally butcher the **** out of that with the teams i coach myself. literally a retarded monkey is a better regular season coach than me.

if people are somewhat in the mentoring side of co-coaching, the one place i think i can probably help make any coach better is with respect to team planning, thats my favorite part of the game and the most important part of being successful. as a brand new d1 rookie, terrible recruiter, i was successful just off mostly team planning and team setup/game planning, even though i literally could not recruit for ****. i remember my first d1 championship team, in my 7th lifetime d1 season, up to that point i literally had recruited a grand total of 1 high end BCS quality player in my life. but that didnt stop me - by season 15 we had won 5 in the last 9 seasons, maybe the greatest d1 run of all time, not knowing how to recruit for ****. so really, my ideal partner is a guy who is already able to build teams that can compete for titles in high d1, and i just contribute mostly on the strategy side, letting them handle a lot of the execution. i like the theory better anyway.. but im happy to do execution side stuff too. fairly open, as long as i get my fix on the strategy side, thats what i miss. frankly, i cant stand playing the damn game the 80% of the time you are just executing the strategy... but anyway, as long as i can team up with a guy who can recruit well and coach decently already, i think our team could be extremely successful out of the gate, regardless of if you do most things, or if i take primary on half/most of it - im flexible. the strategy is everything as long as your team is decently talented, and you can get really deep into team composition strategy - everyone thinks recruiting is most important for some crazy reason! so im not as concerned about how we split the mechanics, im open, especially if both coaches are fully competent in those areas - then we can just focus on strategy (recruiting strategy too). thats the best part anyway, it seems to me...
