Reading the thread on playing C in RF is interesting and got me wondering if my strategy at other positions are wrong.  Am I better off playing Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Ned Griffith at SS for his offense or playing Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Esteban Saenz at SS for his defense?  And at C, am I better off giving up PC and playing a guy like Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Rick Buckley or giving up offense for defense and playing a guy like Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Brutus Gardner?  I've played 10,000 HBD games and never thought much about it until the RF vs C thread.

Neither are great SS's.  Griffith is especially sketchy....but not all that much more so that Saenz.  Personally, I would play Gardner.  Not so much for the better PC (but it is a lot better) but he's also going to control the running game. Griffith wins a GG in LF, btw.  That's where I would play him on your team.

It's hard to compare career numbers because they progress/regress and play in different situations but NG has been the better SS.

At the end of the day, you have to determine the better hitter and decide if his offensive output makes up for his lesser D.    That's how I worked the C to RF.

Mike, what is the best way to determine that.  I've always preferred an offensive shortstop that had defensive ratings similar to NG.  I just have never thought the great defensive SS's that are 85-95 rated across the board but hit .210 and have .250 OBP with no power could be more valuable than playing a guy like NG at SS.  I'm just wondering if my thinking is in the minority and how you determine it.

FWIW, I usually use a heavy D SS.    It helps your pitching fatigue because he's not giving up extra outs.  And, for the most part, my pitching is built very tight on the DUR/STM required.

He'll cost me 29.9 outs over the other RF on the season.    329 runs allowed, 2091 outs recorded.   So, using the formula above, Ryu has cost me 3.13 runs.  Pro-rated over a full season, he would cost me 6.55 runs.

Conversely, Ryu's RC is 58.17 in 335 PA.    Pro-rated over 700 PA, he creates 121.55 runs.
The other 4 have 774 PA and 94.88 RC.   Pro-rated over 700 PA, they create 85.81 runs.   That puts Ryu at +35.74 runs.

35.74 - 6.55 = 29.19 runs on a full season.
