Space Age Prog now 20 teams in 1949 - FULL Topic

The Space Age Progressive League has decided to move to a 20-team/four divisions format starting with the 1949 draft and season. We therefore now need only one owner to begin drafting.

We are also currently deciding on the method to be used to fill remaining roster spots with Secondary players since we will until the 1960s continue to live in a world of 16 MLB teams and player numbers while fielding a league of 20 teams and 4 playoff spots.

UPDATE: WE HAVE DECIDED THIS ISSUE:

in addition to the 1949 players (and we are folding 4 rosters we have deconstructed as we go from 24 to 20 teams into the draft pool for 1949 and these include Stan Musial, Alvin Dark, Larry Doby and Jackie Robinson who will be newly drafted for 1949)  we will draft, in a separate draft following the NL and AL players from 1949, players whose LAST career season only was between 1941 and 1945 - during World War II that is and these additonal players, who can be kept as keepers will however not advance in time until we end use of Secondaries altogether sometime in the 1960. These players can be kept as keepers. Rosters may go to 30 players overall - NO computer generated AAA are used in Space Age, but we now limit keepers lists to 20 players.,

We use a random order for our drafts for this one remaining season. The owner with the first pick in random order will choose whether we pick NL or AL players first, and the order of the other league's players for 1949 will be in the opposite order, and both drafts will be serpentine.

From 1950 on instead, the cumulative W-L record over the previous 4 seasons will determine draft order with the team with the worst record over 4 years going first. We draft players who played for the NL and for the AL in 1949 (and subsequent seasons) separately, so that there is more than one "top pick".

WE NEED JUST ONE MORE OWNER TO START THE 1949 DRAFT THIS SATURDAY OFF THE CLOCK AND ON THE CLOCK NEXT TUESDAY !

The following team is available.

Please keep in mind that, because of the nature of having been, until now,  a 24 team league in a 16 team era, the number of keepers from season to season have been fairly small, and only after the current season's drafts did we usually each have 16 players,  and reached 25-30 only after drafting the players from our additional Secondary players. So this roster looks pretty much like all of ours right now.

Available team with 1948 roster players:

4. Philadelphia Balboas (AL Connie Mack Stadium) 67-95 in 1948

UPDATE, DUE TO THE CONTRACTION OF 4 TEAMS AND THE NEW FOUR DIVISION, 20 TEAM LEAGUE STRUCTURE, THIS TEAM WILL NEED TO BE IN THE AL WEST, AND SO WE ASK THE NEW OWNER TO PLEASE MOVE IT ACROSS THE MISSISSIPPI TO ANY AVAILABLE BALLPARK NOT CURRENTLY IN USE IN THE LEAGUE (or at least across the Delaware Water Gap !). Thanks.

These players are from the team's 1948 roster:

C Jim Hegan
2B Eddie Stanky, Billy Hitchcock
3B Frankie Gustine
SS Dick Culler
OF Dom Dimaggio, Ralph Hodgin, Johnny Blatnik
P Mickey Haefner, Joe Hatten, Vern Bickford, Frank Biscan, Kent Peterson, Bob Porterfield, Orval Grove, Ike Pearson

Please sitemail or post here if you are interested in taking over this team and joining this innovative league with a fantastic group of owners, and with 4 shots at the playoffs in a 1949 world !

We will start our draft off the clock on Saturday Feb. 22 and go on the clock probably Tuesday Feb. 25 or a day later.

We need just one more owner to complete the league. This is a big draft: four teams have contracted and we have some of the greatest players ever available for 1949. Plus it is the last draft based on random order so cumulative W-L record over the previous 4 seasons determines placement starting in 1950 (Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle arrive a year after that !)

This team that is available currently has a total of 213 wins over our first three seasons, which puts it in third place for the fewest wins, only two behind the second place team over the same period. So it has a good possibility of some decent drafting over the next few drafts, though its randomly determined position for this draft in 1949 has not yet been set.

We have generated the random order for the drafts - the owner with first pick decides if we draft players from the NL or AL first, and that is not yet known, but in whichever league we draft first from the available team has the no.3 pick in round 1 and number 18 in the first round of the other league draft.

I should add: we have separate drafts of the NL and AL - and of Secondary players some of whom are good and can now be kept as keepers until baseball's expansion allows us to do without them at some point in the 1960s - in order to reduce the over-emphasis on a single draft position which is too often the obsession of owners in progressive leagues. There are effectively two number one picks, and a third one of generally lesser players but players who since they do not advance in time can be very effective for a long time to come.

There is a similar logic behind the way draft order will be determined (as originally planned when the league started) from 1950 on (our 5th season overall as we began in 1946): cumulative four-year W-L record does admittedly allow for the possibility of tanking for draft position, but makes it a bit complicated, as one needs to have a lousy team for a good while and not just one year, also again, with two different league player drafts, only the first of the two has the team with the worst W-L record going first, and in the second league draft the 5th worst W-L record over previous 4 years goes first, followed by the 6th etc. until get to team 20 and then the worst to 4th worst go.

So we have set up some experimental methods to throw some monkey wrenches into the mix of how people work out draft position in relation to team performance.
