As someone who came to this game late, can anyone explain to me why DITR is even here?
It's not just someone random on the street handing you a hedgehog, it's someone forcing a hedgehog into your care. For a little while, you try to convince yourself, hey maybe I do like hedgehogs after all.
Sorry, but I'm of the opinion that all it does is make you consider a player you never would have considered for a career otherwise. The guy maybe doesn't get cut in AA when you let a similar player stagnate and retire. You hold out hope for a player you never should have. You look at the Rule 5 Draft, and it's littered with DITRs, and yours doesn't even get picked.
And in six seasons, I've never had a single DITR who was a position player other than catcher. I have a DITR catcher who MAY make the majors someday, but only because he's a defensive specialist... and because he somehow got a DITR twice.
