Fullcourt press and various tempos Topic

Hey guys I'm taking over a new team and am going to start lots of young players to get some improvement. The team runs a FCP which I wanna stick with. I have used FCP before but never with a slowdown tempo. I usually always use fast paced. How do you think slowing down or speeding up affects the press? What is the preferred tempo to run with the press with a motion offense? Thanks

I vary my motion/FCP tempo based on my opponent. It's all a question of where I think I've got the biggest edge with the game.

So you play slow down with the press sometimes and don't think it limits the effectiveness of the press?

I use slow down a lot with a FCP. Uptempo without great IQs is a hack-a-thon.... Sometimes even with good IQ it can be rough

i think its a matter of stamina and depth.   i use slowdown, ALOT with press.   especially early in the year if i have alot of dudes with 70ish Stam or less.   i guess if you ran 12 deep the stamina would not hurt so bad and slowdown might not be needed,  but i usually redshirt a kid and often have one walkon,  so im usually 10 or 11 deep and , unless they have  good STa  (starter+backup=155-160), i find that slowdown is needed else we get alot of deadred players at end of game.

Ok thanks guys. Great info. For some reason I just thought that the press
Would be more effective if we pushed the tempo and tried
To wear teams down but I'm glad to hear that press
Works great with a slowdown as well.

apparently your offensive tempo has no direct effect on your opponents fatigue. It does indirectly, theoretically, by increasing the number of possessions, but that's it if I am correct...

im not sure about what you mean  "direct"  or "indirect",  but i have always felt it does affect your opponents fatigue.  i guess i could be wrong though.

and musk.... i do feel like the best way to run a press in a perfect world is to run uptempo and use it to wear down your opponent... but only if you can do it without wearing out your dudes.

if you are consistently pushing the ball up court on offense the defense would have to consistently scramble to get back, which ought to increase their fatigue. My understanding is it doesn't work that way.

i may be off base, but the offensive tempo you set for your team shouldn't have any affect on your defensive settings. you do not set defensive tempo, tempo is offense only.

thats right ivan,  but the type of defense you play affects player fatigue.   and  offensive tempo and type also affect fatigue.

so, in order for me to decide what tempo i want to run my offense..  i need to know how much my own defensive scheme will wear my own team down.
