transfer player info- ethics question Topic

heres something that must have come up before,, but ive never seen it discussed....

when youre looking at a transfer player,  theres often alot of guesswork, because you cant use FSS.

but there is one guy that has just the information youre looking for.... the previous coach.

I have never asked the previous coach if he minded providing me with potential info on a transfer recruit,  but it has crossed my mind.   the only reason i havent is because it seems like it would be unethical or against the spirit of the game.

ive never had anyone ask me for such info either... not sure if i would provide it... probably not ... for same reasons.

Have any of you had this come up, or at least considered the questions?   what are your feelings?

related note:   why isnt there FSS on transfers?  in real life it would seem that you would have just as much info on tranfers as high schoolers... maybe more.   and if they were involved in FSS it would erase the above ethical conundrums and shady dealings.  maybe there is some programming issue that would make it difficult?

I had it happen a few season ago when I returned to Oberlin from D2. I cut a player signed by the previous Coach and during recruiting another Coach sitemailed me asking about his potentials. I told him two things: 1) That was a player signed by the previous Coach and I didn't have that info and 2) Sharing potentials during recruiting is not allowed.
I never heard back from him.

What if that's the reason you don't get FSS with transfers is because you're actually just supposed to ask the players previous coach and hope he's willing to respond. I wonder if being able to see the offensive and defensive iq's for free has anything to do with not being able to scout anything.

seble has spoken on this exact issue, you aren't allowed to ask the old coach who a transfer came from, anything about that player. the general rule is that you are not allowed to acquire, elicit, or provide any information to another coach during recruiting, unless that information is already freely available to that person (such as how much bonus money a conference got). its also ok if the receiver of information would not value the information in any scenario - such as when you mentor a coach in another world and they tell you potential of players they are trying to evaluate.

i suspect you cannot scout these players because it was easier from a programming standpoint to leave them out - i really doubt they would do work to exclude them.

The thread is here, also titled "Ethics question". Seble's response is on page 4.

For what it's worth, I don't think it is terribly unethical, if unethical at all. I'm not that up to speed on how coaches in real life deal with transfer players, but if I were in that position I would definitely contact their previous coach to inquire about the player in question and the circumstances involving his departure.

HD recruiting deviates so far from real life, that really what happens in real life is not relevant. in real life you can ask another coach how serious he is about a player. maybe you won't believe him but that doesn't mean its OK in HD. in real life you can state your interest in players. its not OK in HD. why would transfers be any different? its got to follow HD rule on the subject.

I'm well aware that HD recruiting is much different than what happens in RL, but to say that it deviates so much so that we can't (or shouldn't) apply real recruiting principles is - in my humble opinion - counterproductive to the overall game, as well as an appeal to authority/status quo that I just can't get behind. Honestly, I'm all for rules that contribute to the integrity of the game, and I've even openly argued in the past that some of the rules don't go far enough towards this goal, but this rule isn't very well thought through.....though that is not a good enough reason to justify violating the terms laid down by the site admins.

I've been sitemailed by a coach asking for potentials before.  I told him it would be unethical for me to disclose and he never responded.  However, I wonder if it would have been better if I gave him fake information.

Ahhh, interesting question...

If we pretending for a minute the admins didn't consider a transfer players previous coach sharing player information with other interested coaches as a violation of the fairplay guidlines, then the decision of whether or not to lie to interested coaches about that player depends on the angle you want to play...is it worth it or not to do so, just as there would be a risk in asking a coach for such info, there would be a risks associated with divulging misleading information.

However, for your exact situation, I think the only ethical position that somebody can take is to do exactly what you did by informing the other user of the admins position on the situation, providing any information on the subject (independent of whether it is factually correct or not) seems to fall outside the scope of appropriate action outlined by the site.
