Greetings  and will probably kick up a bit of a poop-storm but here goes

a league I am in just had the Rule 5 Draft -- Drafted a very good player left unprotected by an owner who, for whatever reason ( don't really want to parse out the reason ) but came back and noted he had been unable to protect some of his guys.

my dilemma.
Do I
1 - offer the player back
2 - trade the player back to the owner
3 - keep the guy because -- me likey

would it be a total D-bag move on my part to keep the guy or is it 'good politics' as I am the new guy in the league to offer the player back

and Go.

You already know the answer

Depends on the world.   Some worlds say "Tough ****.   You have over a week to protect players."   Others are more "An obvious mistake.  Give the guy a break."

In your particular case, Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Ramon Wan was a 890k RP that got a DITR.   Essentially, he was a gift to the original owner.    If you can swing a deal that satifies you, why not?  But, if he is interested in giving you some guy who might be the 25th man on a roster for a couple of seasons, I'd remind him that Wan was a 890k IFA that became a DITR gift.

I'll add that the 6 GB rating is going to leave you disappointed when you look at WHIP compared to ERA.

think I will opt for Door number 2 Monte.

with the 6 GB -- means he'll be serving up HR"s at an alarming rate?

I had this happen recently. I think the guy lost 2 pitchers in the top 3 picks. I wouldn't offer the player back because, as Mike said, there is plenty of time to protect players. But as a courtesy, I did trade the pitcher back to the original owner for a mid-level prospect and he took a vet off my hands who had one year left at a high salary. We both benefited.

Very likely.   I had a pretty good pitcher with 0.   He ended up not being a pretty good pitcher in my mind.

There's a big red 5 next to Rule 5 players from the day the world roles over until the day of the Rule 5 draft.  Since most worlds take at least 1-3 weeks to fill up, plus a week of preseason HBD before the draft, that give everyone at least 2-4 weeks to decide which players they don't want to risk losing to Rule 5 and a full week to get it done.

If the GM in question did ANYTHING during preseason, and he's played at least one other season, I can't see any reason to give back a Rule 5 player.

In part because it sets off a domino effect. You would have gotten the next player on your list. So if you give a player back, you should be able to claim any other player picked in Rule 5 and ask that GM to give him to you. And then that GM should be able to claim the player he didn't get from someone else.  Until the end of the line, That could be a dozen trades.  Doable, but a pain in the ***. All because someone didn't take 5 min to put the 1 or 2 player worth worrying about on their 40 man.

Sometimes tough love is the best way to teach.
