D1 to D3 err D3 to D1? Topic

About to write this and realized I had 2 questions

The first is has a D1 recruit ever dropped to D3? Would it even be worth the D3 schools time at that point to pick him up?

The other one is how easy is it to go D3 coach to D1 coach? Is that possible without a National championship?

Random questions thanks!

No You don't need to win a NC to move to Div 1. You will need to pass through Div 2. Div 2 is relatively an easy move. To Div one will need to have a winning record and a history of NT's and or PI's.
I have never heard of a Div 3 coach getting a Div 1 player...but maybe it has happened

If you have an A or A+ program prestige and the D1 recruit is inside 70 miles (and preferably 10-20), you can get someone who initially starts on the D1 screen to come to D3. Of course, that involves the right combination of variables. I believe a coach in Rupp pulled it off in the recently-completed recruiting period.

Yes it is possible but not commonplace to get a DI recruit at DIII. Or at least people claim to have done it. In all honesty, I don't bother to even look at my original DI list so maybe I have done it myself and just don't know it. Would have to be a local recruit though.

Yes it is also possible to go straight to DI from DIII. Don't count on getting a good job though. Best I've gotten was being qualified for B prestige non Big-6 jobs out of DIII.

hmm, ya I was looking at it and someone the worst D1 recruits, I mean like worst within 200 miles of me are in some cases good D3 recruits. I searched within 200 miles and D1 only and got some recruits that actually were worse than my best recruit last season, I assume maybe his ceiling is higher though?

I don't care for taking another step into D2 just to step into D1, Id be fine rebuilding in D1 and applying to a school no one has worked at for 5+seasons. I might try to snag a D1 recruit in D3 this off-season and post about it so people can see its possible

It's a fairly easy progression from D3 to D1, in my experience. I'm still working on establishing a successful high major program at Villanova, so I can't speak to how long that takes yet.

D3 = 1 season. I've never seen it take longer than that to be qualified for a D2 job.
D2 = 4-5 seasons, with at least reasonable success, including 2 or 3 NT appearances will get you qualified for low D1 jobs, in my experience. This is obviously easier to do if you "cherrypick" a school that's already pretty good when you jump to D2. I like a rebuild, so I've never done that, but doing so might also shorten my 4-5 seasons estimate to "2-3 seasons."
Low D1 = Approximately 8-10 season with really good results will often qualify you for a low-level BCS school. At least that was what happened at Campbell for me, if my memory serves. I landed Villanova (which was in AWFUL shape when I took it) after turning Campbell around. I had several chances to jump to a higher-level "mid major" program from Campbell, but always chose not to do so, which might have kept me from landing a better job than Villanova.

Hope this helps!

What rednu said matches my experience with recruiting D1 players to D3.  D1s are not necessarily better than D2, or even D3, recruits (at least the D1s who will actually talk to you).

This team has 3 current players who began recruiting on the D1 search and later signed.  I suspect no one would guess the 3 correctly without cheating and looking at where they're from.

Thanks everyone for the info, I just always read these threads about D2 dropdowns but was wondering has anyone ever looked at D1 drops, It may be worthwhile, I'm going to target a monitor a few and see what happens

My D3 team once managed to get a D1 player to consider me.  My team was A+ and the recruit was only 30 miles from me.  two cycles later, a D2 team jumped on him and I was toast.

I think that is the biggest problem. Even if you get a D1 to consider you, there is a very slim chance that he goes unnoticed by D2 and D1 teams.

You can definitely go from D3 straight to D1. I can't remember when I first became eligible, but you probably need a couple of deep NT runs. It is difficult, but not impossible, to go straight to a BCS job from D3. I was eligible for a couple of low prestige BCS jobs the past couple seasons in Naismith.

I don't get why you'd want to pass up D2, it's the best div in the game.

I jumped from D3 to D1, very possible but ultimately if you don't have D2 experience I wouldn't recommend it.... D1 is a whole different world.

I played fair, and I guess Brown, Nanney, and Carter. After checking, I think I was 1/3, but would need confirmation.

Nice, I was hoping somebody would play.  I'm surprised you got Brown..he was only about 430 overall when I signed him.

But you're right about getting 1/3.  The D1s were Brown, Buchanan, and Estey.  Very good D3 players, but they don't really stand out on that team.

Carter was actually on the D3 search from the start.  Nanney was a D2 pulldown.
