While completely cosmetic, I always thought it would be neat for the players to actually have jersey numbers that you could assign to them. I wonder if that would be difficult to do?

I believe it would be fairly easy to implement.

so long as it would be automatically assigned for coaches that might not want to spend time on it, i don't see why it would hurt.

Numbers would be a nice little touch.

I send CS a ticket on this every month, lol. Would love to have that option.

It seems like it would be pretty easy, as long as the numbers were reasonable (making it more probable for a player to be assigned to #10 than #78, for instance)

They need to do it like the NCAA does and give the players the options to wear the following #'s only:
0,00, 1-5,10-15,20-25,30-35,40-45,50-55
Can't wait til this happens...I'll keep suggesting it until they do :)

I was told a long time ago that basketball player numbers don't go above "5", so that when refs signal the players' numbers to the scoring table, 1 hand does the "tens" digit and other hand does the "ones" digit.    Any truth to this?

Definitely. It's supposed to be like that in the NBA, I believe, but they're a bit more flexible (Rodman's #91, Batum's #88, Mahinimi's #28, etc etc.

That's what I hear as well.

If you try to go with a digit above 5 in the NBA you have to get the league to approve it.

They have relaxed on the issue a lot in the past 10 years.

I love this suggestion. Past rosters could track players by jersey numbers too.

And down the line, it would be fun, also, if an outstanding player could get his number retired upon the achievement of some measurables.

MyGeneration...glad I'm not the only one who thought of that, lol. If a guy becomes the school's all-time leading scorer that # goes up in the rafters. I actually already "number" my players and keep it on a spreadsheet with past rosters. Also designed unis for them. Yep, I'm a fully-obsessed HD Coach.
