I have a player signed for four years at $4mil/per. I waived him and was going to send him to AAA. He said no and he would rather become a free agent and that I should release him. If I release him, am I still on the hook for his salary since he didnt want to go to the minors?

Yes, you would still be responsible for his salary if you release him.

Thats not really fair. He cleared waivers, but refused to go to the minors. So he HAS to be on my ML squad for the next four years?
