Superb defensive catcher: Abysmal bat: Sign him? Topic

Drafted http://whatifsports.com/HBD/Pages/Popups/ProspectProfile.aspx?pid=6822946 with my 4th pick (2nd round). He's a 21-yr old college C who projects to 88-89-100 with the glove (currently at 66-61-72). His bat projects to 77-23-8-14-22. Pretty putrid with the stick....

My 3rd pick is an 18-yr old 1B who projects to 95-43-57-73-77 with the bat. Useful, anyway. He can't play RF.

I have $17M in HS Scouting and only $7M in College, I think. $16M in Advanced (I'm a contrarian, I know).

Who do you sign? The C wants $1M and the 1B wants $1.8M...I have $2M left, so I can't ink them both.

The C is pretty incredible with the glove but will hit about .160-.180-.190, or so. Well, probably a bit better. He would be a great late inning guy....but that is it, I think.

Would the 1B be worth keeping?   Do you use 1B like that?

IMO, the C will give you at least 4 BL seasons a defensive replacement.  The 1B likely won't ever be the 2nd/3rd best 1B on my roster.   Therefore, he nothing more than a call-up guy.

with your college scouting that low, the numbers on the C are going to be less accurate than the numbers on the 1B.  and i've found that defensive catchers aren't all that hard to come by.  either in rule 5, or even minor league FA.  or trading a bench player for them.  the 1B is a decent bat, but i usually like my 1B to have a lot of power myself, and he's not a stellar bat for the position.  if he was a 2B or CF he'd be great.  so really it's a toss up.  though if you could free up $2M in your payroll budget, you could transfer a million over and sign both.  :>

Thanks guys:  You've both hit my feelings on the head.  I like thge C...but I am concerned about my college scouting, too.

Hmmmmmm.......

The catcher is SO bad a hitter that you'll be able to find someone with a similar glove and 10-12 point higher bat ratings someplace like rule 5.

The 1B is what Mike says-- about .290/.370/.440 against RHP if he bats left or switches.  I try not to roster guys like that if I'm contending but he might have some modest trade value.

I vote plan (c)-- look for a $1M international of some potential bench use, and if that fails, sign the 1B a couple days before the end of the minor league season.  Make sure you get him a regular season game appearance so you can trade him next season.

He has no trade value.

I'd sign the C. Much more likely to find time on ML roster assuming scouting is close enough to reality.

Speaking as a guy that loooooves the defensive catcher; the bat is always the correct choice.

I've picked up starting ML defensive catchers on the WW, in a trade for minor league filler, in minor league 6 year FA...don't waste the first 3 rounds on catchers that can't hit.

It's already wasted.    The question is which to sign.

Don't you back talk me. I'm teaching him a valuable lesson.
