The answer to a good trivia question Topic

Who was the last man in the majors to get a hit off Satchel Paige? The answer is below. Satchel was officially (!) 53 at the time of this game, and except for that one base runner pitched 3 perfect innings against the Red Sox. Heck of a thing.

Trivia question: How'd Ted Williams do in this 1957 plate appearance against the White Sox?

P.S. That's Billy Pierce throwing warm up pitches to Sherm Lollar.

8/4/2018 1:23 AM
that is just a great great picture

i can't make out what the 18 8 19 10 numbers (upper right) mean

1stG and C i'm guessing after looking at some other blurry pics of that scoreboard

or P and 1stG? bein dark this could be the 2nd game of a DH....
8/5/2018 4:35 PM (edited)
yeah, Billy Pierce #19 for the pale hose, so i'm guessing they won the 1st game 10-8
8/5/2018 4:39 PM
nope, retrosheets says no doubleheader at comiskey that day

so it must be the battery
8/5/2018 4:52 PM
Yeah, those scoreboard numbers threw me too.

Here's the link to the boxscore.

As you can see in the play-by-play section, Pierce struck Williams out this at-bat.

Photographers used to get great shots like these before the rule was implemented banning them from the field during play.

its funny how many scoreboards back in the day were sponsored by watchmakers--dust bowl tech companies
