OK so I here I am recruiting and trying to pull down Div II prospects to my Div III team.  Of course I am still recruiting what i consider the best of the Div III prospects.

Imagine my surprise when not once, but twice, a Div III recruit I am interested in is being recruited by a Div II team.

I thought I read somewhere that you couldn't recruit below your level, the 'athletic director' would veto the attempt, or something like that.

But obviously it must be legal cuz it's happening.   Any insight?   I am confused.  Even though these guys are really nice DIII prospects, these DII teams should be aiming higher, I think.

You can go down 1 division, I believe its only for D1 recruiting D3

D1 can recruit 1,2
D2 can recruit 1,2,3
D3 can recruit 2,3

Sometimes teams go after really good D3 juco's or transfers from D1/2 schools that end up on the D3 list but are really good, or you just have people grabbing roster spots when they grab crappy players.

It's always frustrating when it seems D2 coaches are building good D3 teams with their D2 budget.  But theOnlysis is right-you can recruit down a level at D2 and D3.  At D1, there's more of a random component to how lowly of a recruit you can sign.

One correction to the previous post-at D3 you can recruit D1 players if they are within 70 miles of your campus and you're A or A+.

The other thing to remember is recruiting is relative to a school's prestige.  A D+ D2 school may have guys in the 420's show up on their D2 list from the get go, while those same recruits show up on an A or A+ D3 schools D3 list.  I've seen several top D3 coaches say recruiting with A+ at D3 is tougher than B or C prestige, simply because of the competition they get from D2 schools.

Oh I didn't know about grabbing D1 players from D3, when you are A/A+ I'm assuming its just unranked D1 players within 70 miles?  I know you can get ranked transfers from D1.

Sorry to bring this back up but for D1 recruits at D3 what is the max overall you can get within 70 miles?  500/550?

With 4 seasons recruiting with an A/A+ at d-3 SJF, I was never able to get a local d-1 as a backup option. I'm sure it can and does happen, but don't count on it.

I get it all the time at NYU.  Probably because I have 50 or so D1 recruits within 10 miles every year.

I can verify the fact if you're at DI you can't go after some DIII recruits - and be careful, because if you don't know, it's not an "obvious" thing and can be frustrating to find out.

I had a guy transfer out and wanted to keep my class sizes the same, so I went after one of the few seniors (juco 1 yr left) available. Since I searched all levels for juco 1 yr players and I rarely go after jucos, I had no idea by his rating or any other information he was a DIII player.

I sent him some effort and he's considering me, but every time I offer a scholarship, it didn't go through, the money is returned, and the only hint you get is a very vague sarcastic message from your AD with references to the show Punk'd and Ashton Kutcher. It's incredibly unclear, so I kept pouring effort into the guy only to find out after the fact from others on here what was going on.

So if you're at DI - even low DI - and you offer a scholarship and the money is returned to you and it just won't work, check to see if it's a DIII player and you didn't know it somehow, because I had to learn the hard way, and I've even been playing long enough I've seen most things by now.
