How important, if any, is it to try and alternate your lineup ... lefty, righty, etc ?  Does it matter in SLB ?

Officially, it's a flat 5% difference. Not really worth worrying about.

Of more note is that in most leagues LHP is about 25-35% of your games. So it makes for convenient setups if you need to split your PA.

If you just mean alternating L and R in the batting order, I don't think that makes too much difference.  Unless an owner has a guy set up as a LH or RH specialist, the SIM isn't choosing a pitcher based on the handedness of the batters coming up, so you don't really need to play the odds that way.  And even when there are LH and RH specialists, it seems difficult to manage when the SIM will use them in a game.  There's been lots of threads over the years about how "Sparky never uses the LH specialist when I need him".  So I wouldn't worry too much.  

Switch hitters rule, though. That 5% makes a difference if it's every PA over the course of a season. And the more the merrier.

Except that switch hitters are neutral events. (Go figure.)

I'm currently 100 games into a league and Sparky hasn't used my LH specialist yet. Not once. What's the point of it?

There's not much point, honestly. They're not used very well. All it does is provide usability for pitchers with less than 40 IP, which otherwise generally don't have enough IP to fill any bullpen role well -- though you can stretch a few less than that if you have to.

There are ways to try to maximize LH/RH Specialist usage, though I'm not particularly familiar with them. I don't bother using them unless the team I'm drafting falls into it -- certainly not for anything resembling an Open League.
