Well...let me take a guess at the next lesson you will learn. If you pulled down a true 4 or 5 "star" recruit with a C+ prestige and very little bonus cash, you'd actually be hanging a "kick me" sign on yourself. And some Big 6 school will oblige. You might be able to nab a sneaky good, but slightly flawed, 4 "star" without attracting too much attention.
I mean, you never know, if you have a great recruit within 10 miles and you waste no money (not even on FSS), then you might be able to battle a distant A prestige school that had already been beat up in a couple battles. However, I've lost $100k on a single recruit (or pretty damn near). That can happen.
The key thing is that if you decide to reach up, then you've got to show no battles and no waste. At every level, if you are going to battle, you need to figure out how much money your opponent can devote. Prestige or distance advantage? How many openings? How much bonus cash? Any other battles...at a disadvantage? Any obvious waste? Clearly lacking carryover? They are scouting you and choosing to poach you based upon that.
