You can send them thru waivers but, if they suck, no one is claiming them. If you release them, you are stuck with everything except 327k pro-rated even if someone picks them up.
The best option is to play out with those deals. And I wouldn't assume the rebuild is a long process. HBD isn't set up that way.
Agreed. It's better to just play out those deals, especially if they can provide OK production. If they can't, sit them on the bench, or stash them in AAA if they're truly terrible.
Use the waiver wire -- you can find all kinds of useful role players there for free, essentially. If you're not in a position where one or even two great players will make you a contender, stay away from big-ticket free agents for a season or even two. But
do sign good veterans, even if they're kind of old, on the last day or two of FA to one- or two-year deals with mutual options. There's no sense in sucking, because you just might sneak into the playoffs, and winning is more fun. You can still rebuild with smart draft picks between ~10-25 and a couple of good int'l free agents along the way. Then sign a Type A free agent or three to put you over the hump.
