Should I believe my lying eyes? Topic

I have a 19 year old LF minor leaguer that was drafted before last season. In his initial 'Rookie League' campaign, he went nuclear to the tune of 34 doubles, 31 HR, 97 runs, 108 RBI, 50 bb in 297 AB for a .374/.481/.815 slash line (1.296 OPS).

Some of his projected rates include:

93 overall
86 speed
64 contact
93 power
93 v L
97 v R
100 batting eye
76 baserunning

I know it's folly to think a minor leaguer is going to just copy/paste those numbers into his big league game, but should I be as giddy as I feel like I should be?

Are these players based on previously existing players?

Is there a reason why I've turned down like 5 trade proposals for him in the past couple of weeks? (I joined a HBD universe and was 'awarded' an orphaned team.

Needless to say, I've since promoted him.

Thoughts?

You are relatively new. Anyone trying to trade for him is attempting to take advantage of that fact. Until you feel comfortable that you could answer most if not all of your own questions don't trade prospects.

I would also guess all of these proposals came unsolicited and offered you a great package of solid players.

Read that as I wonder if I can convince the newbie to give me his #1 pick from a season ago for guys who will never be more than half way decent ML players.

At 19 if he was on your ML roster he would have the 5th best power, 5th best VR and 5th best Batting Eye all extremely important to a hitter

In three posts, crickett failed to answer hardly any of your questions.

1.  Probably not.  RH hitter with VR as his strength.     He'll be good but forget 1.296 OPS.   Minor league stats are almost meaningless.   He should have been in AA anyway.

2.  They players are not based on real players.   Most of us probably say "Yeah, he looks like a fake McGwire to me" or something like that but they aren't.

3.   Yes, crickett pretty much nailed it.   Fresh blood in the water and the sharks circled.   Get out of the trade pool and learn the game before trading your best prospect.

I assume that this is the player you're referring to: McKay Bochtler

Looking at his current ratings, at age 19, he's going to be a solid player.  You might get something approaching his "counting" numbers over a full season at the ML level if he develops well over the next couple of seasons, but you won't get anywhere near the slash line numbers.

And, what crickett13 said.  Beware of offers, especially the 3 for 1 offers you might receive.  Three average players will never equal one stud.  Seek out the opinions of a veteran NOT in in your world to help evaluate any offers you are even thinking about considering.

Those trying to trade for him?  Their smiles are a thin disguise.

Oh, I appreciate the advice, and though I'm technically a newbie to HBD, I'm a WIS vet enough to know they're circling.

And yeah, I figured he'd not hit the slashes, but short of not rushing him too quickly, what can you do to help him realize his potential(s)? The guy's 'stacked'. I mean, I'm not saying Ted Williams stacked, but I'm saying Ted WIlliams stacked.

Mike - That's where I put him for this season. I had bumped him up to High A, and then was thinking, 'what's a guy gotta do to the ball in 300 AB to justify playing at AA?

The logic behind it is he's in RL/LoA/HiA his first partial season, AA his second season, AAA his third(unless you want to call him up) and in AAA when he has to be added to the 40(his 4th).   At that point, you decide to let him play the 4th in the minors, do the dickaround hold him back 20 games or call him up to the bigs.   Ideally, you have better hitting coaches at each level of development.

Thanks again MikeT23...and speaking of 'lying eyes'. Why is the otherwise stellar help section layout done up with a black background with what would appear to be some shade of brown font? Are these NSA secrets?

Wow. I hadn't looked at that stuff in awhile but that's REALLY horrible.
