Defensive Positioning Topic

I have a question regarding defensive alignments.  Does anyone use a baseline of % of shots for the other team for determining how many "ticks" away from 0 to move their focus to inside vs. outside?

For example.. if a team has 35% of their shots from 3 - position to +2, 40% of shots from three - position to +3, etc.

i use "ticks" combined w/ FG3%. so if a team shoots +/- 25% of their FG's from beyond the arc, and shoots < +/- .350% FG3%, i'll leave it at 0. all adjustments to my settings begin from that starting point.

My dog has had ticks before

I don't really have any data for this, but I rarely go beyond +/- 2. Anything beyond that seems extreme. I look at my opponent's offensive distribution. If the majority of their points come from guards, I play (+). If the majority of their points come from bigs, I play (-). This works especially well against SIMs, as they don't adjust. And like sully said, if they shoot poorly from behind the arc, I'll play (-) and invite them to shoot more threes, even if more of their points come from guards. My cutoff for this is usually 33%.

Another factor is offensive IQ. If a given player shoots a lot but has a low IQ, I'll be more likely to let them shoot.

Seems like a lot of coaches struggle with this. I'll see tournament games where a team shoots 30+ 3's a game and the coach will play a -2 and get killed from the 11 3's they hit.

Simple for me, If they shoot a lot of 3's I usually play a +2/+3 depending.  They shoot 0-3 a game I'll stack the inside -3/-4. I never play -5 because I believe the amount of fouls increases a lot.

I play -5 all the time....I only use FGA to set positioning.....33% is zero for me, it's it's above 50% I go +5, if it's under 5% I go -5.....I eyeball all the stuff in the middle.......I also pay attention to recent games, sometimes the numbers are distorted by early season games or games against SIMS

Sometimes a coach may use '0' or lower against a decent 3 point shooting team if they have a significant deficiency in Rebounding. As you are likely aware, the farther away from the basket the defense is positioned, the lesser the likelihood of a rebound. This can be the dilemma I see when defending a good outside shooting team, while being undermanned inside.

"the farther away from the basket the defense is positioned, the lesser the likelihood of a rebound"  That seems like a useful reminder to me.  Is there any way to try to take advantage of this, or to minimize any bad effects on my team?

yeah... when your team sucks rebounding wise, you favor negative defensive settings, to help compensate. if you have a good rebounding team, its easier to use +/- as you'd want based on the opponent's 3 point shooting.

Aha, I see.  That is a consideration in my defensive positioning.  Thank you.

And zones and FCP have a rebounding disadvantage compared to man-to-man, is that not so?
