I haven't made a baseball team in years... I just recently made one to get back into the swing of things, and I'm still not performing like I'd want to...

Can anyone post a couple of the older links that used to be up, to help how to pick Hitters and such. My pitching staff seems to be okay, but my hitting seems to always underachieve.

Check out the post at the very top of the SLB Forum page "Celebrating the Best of the SLB Forum."  It has a ton of links to the most useful info.

You should also read through the "Dynamic Pricing Feedback" thread here after you get re-familiarized. As of early February a player's price will be determined by how often they are drafted by owners in Open Leagues, changing every 3 months (I think?) so that it won't be as easy to rely on long-term cookie player bargains, keeping us all on our toes.

But yes, start with the "Celebrating the Best of the SLB Forum" thread where contrarian23 and others have posted most of the really important info to function well here.

Welcome back.

I've read through most of the articles that were posted on that page, it seems some of the links don't work anymore, so I've decided to post a few questions here...

When I played before, I noticed that a players RL stats meant absolutely nothing. It was all about the advanced information like avg#...etc...etc. Does this still hold true?

It seems like this sim is becoming more and more like the PC version of Strat-o-Matic Baseball.

lilspike0738, the #stats, at least in the Open Leagues, are very, very important, since they tell you how that player's stats compare across the many decades and averages of different eras of baseball.

set your search engine at the bottom of your Draft Center screen to "advanced" so you can select players using these stats as an option. Not sure what the Strat-O-Matic comment means, as I have the impression from limited playing of that game that it relied on single-season regular and traditional stats like average, home runs, etc. not these advanced ones. If that is true then there is a BIG difference.

A solitaire game that is highly advanced by the way and that you can buy online is Out of the Park Baseball, which is centuries beyond Strat-O-Matic and more like the HD Hardball game on this site except you can use real players, historical, contemporary or any mix you want, as well as fictional players if you prefer. The Hardball Dynasty game here would probably interest many of us if you could use historical and real life players, but the players are all fictional unfortunately, which I at least find boring.

The strat-o-matic reference was due to them having a system for their PC game, that essentially does all the calculations based on the season the person has + ballpark they were in.. The original game was to re-play seasons, and had no purpose for advanced stats, as the entire season would've been on equal playing field with each other. Their online version has been up for a while now, and I believe it does incorporate an advanced stats type of calculation. I feel Strat-o does a MUCH better job than Whatifsports when it comes to fielding, arm strength and speed statistics.

Before, when I played, there were no such thing as advanced stats in Whatif (if there was, they were hidden in their equations), so I'm getting used to the idea and I'm not sure I quite like it... It seems made up, based on their own calculations, and I'm not sure I can agree that certain guys like Buck Freeman would have low # of errors and nearly .400 avg, had he played in a different era. The guy was an astrocious fielder, and sub-optimal hitter for his era... Playing the percentages and getting a guy like him to lead the league in BA, HR, 3B, 2B and RBI is absolutely silly to me.
