Philosophical Team Building Question Topic

In a theme that doesn't use AAA players would you spend a million or so less on a 4th starter(same # of innings lesser quality) to put a couple of semi-useful bodies on your bench or keep the better pitcher and just go with scrubs on the bench?

I can see arguments for eith way I'm just curious what others think

There are enough players under 400K that do a fine job off the bench in all roles (pinch hitting, pinch running, fielding) that I prefer to use the money on the pitcher.

The question wasn't well worded. To get those 400k guys I need to use the lesser 4th starter.

I would never sacrifice SP quality for bench quality.

To an extent it depends on the league and how good you think your team is...

If you think your team is going to be fighting for a playoff spot, then you probably want to spend on the 4th starter. Ultimately you probably win more games with a better SP. If you feel like your team is already very strong, then maybe spend on pinch hitting. Your 4th starter probably doesn't pitch in the postseason, at least not in significant spots, so having extra punch off the bench is going to be more useful. Basically, that guy would pitch in the lowest leverage situations, and a good PH or 2 would make a big difference in the highest leverage situations. But again, only in the postseason, and you have to gett there first.

I'd spend less on the starter, but I am unsure how much. My priorities would be
1) getting enough bench PA so that my starters could make it through a season at 100%.
2) having at least 1 or 2 decent bench bats for PH roles
3) the best pitching I can get

Addendum:

For Manager?
If you like people who stick to the rules - go with types like Isaac Newton or Thomas Aquinas, if you want innovation that breaks with the dominant paradigm, Thomas Kuhn, a manager that really thinks outside the box? Paul Feyerabend (or maybe Emma Goldman !).

John Rawls - umpire
Frederick Von Hayek and John Maynard Keynes - official scorers - they can keep an eye on one another

Baseball Commissioner? Giordano Bruno - the baseball universe is much vaster than we think.

You gotta love it.

Thanks for the thoughtful replies, a couple of comments

Dash - Hey, I expect every team I build to go 162 - 0 and I'm shocked every time they lose a game. Seriously though you have nicely identified the conundrum . While the better #4 starter might win you more games in games you HAVE to win you probably are better off with a #2 PH who hits .302 than one who hits .202 or making sure that your big bat bad defense player has a good defensive replacement.

Zubs - thanks for the list of priorities, it helps. It is kind of what I was trying to think through out loud.

Prof - I'm sure your students love you.

italy..you are the best !!!
that was in your hall of fame...you are in a class by yourself !!!!!
for cleanup i like albert einsten as well...according to certain theories of quantum physics you can be in 2 places at once which will help in the outfield.....for relievers i like a good gunslinger so i like wyatt earp and wild bill hickock and billy the kid..he was a lefty.....
for the mgr....im thinking eisenhower..ike...good strategist and leader and calm and collected as a field general.......
i do like a great knuckleball pitcher as a starter for the innings...so i would suggest curley of the 3 stooges or salvador dali for controlled chaos and painting the corners with utter unpredictable mastery.
for team trainer i like louie pasteur...healthy food and supplements.
for 1st base coach i like emily rastajowski...topps or toppsless...to distract the opposing fielders.
