When rating players for the draft or trying to sign the best available international prospect, does anyone just try to get best available every time? Or do you factor need into it? My thinking if you get the best pitching you can year to year, they are more valuable to trade for whatever you need

I'd never draft someone thinking "I can trade him later" because you never know if you'll get value. I generally draft the best players I can while taking into account what I need. Obviously, if I have 3-C and 2-1B, I'd lower the value of C and 1B.

It's just like the real-life MLB draft -- you aren't drafting for this season or even next season. So just draft the best available player, regardless of position.

I draft or sign best available and use position premium as a tiebreaker

I tend to value pitching over hitting because the teams I have taken all had shortages with pitching. But the pitchers did seem to be best players available in draft though. Plus I seem to have better luck when I target a pitcher in the draft. The hitters I've liked tended to have a bigger fluctuation in overalls before and after the draft than the pitchers did. But that's just what I've seen. And I don't have a ton of time in yet though either.

Best overall. I tend to overvalue pitching so I try to take that into account.

There was once I didn't sort my guys in order from best to worst and a 40 HR shortstop slipped to the second round. I'll always be kicking myself about that.
